Just having another quick look at the black style, I still prefer the blue colour, however the font and buttons do look more sleek/minimalistic.

The blinding contrast of white text on black background is blinding. Blue is less blinding.

I agree with this. The blue seems like a perfect mix, I find reading other forums more difficult if they're white or black.

Most designers agree that dark text on a light background is the way to go.

Having said that, the default vB theme is ugly.

I tried the black theme for a bit but had to change back, problem being another forum I frequent uses brighter colours so alternating between a bright site and a dark site just made my eyes feel more strained.

You could just use Stylish + one of the styles here. The "OcUK Light Grey/Red" is quite nice if you want a white one

When I joined OcUK it was a pale mauve sort of colour, which was quite easy on the eye.
