Starship troopers

Moved.. under box office? Maybe in 1997 it was in the box office!

It isn't such a bad film has a few good laughs don't take it seriously for christ sake, it is not ment to be some deep and thoughtful Sci-Fi.

The very stupid tactics, like complete lack of air support and no heavy armour, in fact no armour what so ever, haven't they heard of tanks?

I still like it though.

Whisky outpost whisky outpost, this is Roughneck 2-0 on tac 3 over

SERVICE GUARANTEES CITIZENSHIP!

I love starship troopers - it's like the ultimate sci-fi B-movie. In fact, I think it's my favourite of all Paul Verhoeven's films. It doesn't take itself too seriously - it's a great comedy. Plus it has a 'brain bug' which has a giant vagina for a face. What's not to like?!

However it's not a patch on the original book.

While in many ways it is a good book, it's worth noting that Heinlein has come in for a lot of criticism for appearing to glorify war. I'm not sure that's exactly what he's doing - downplaying the unpleasant bits is probably more accurate. Heinlein himself never fought, but spent WW2 in a Naval dockyard (with Asimov and L Sprague deCamp) and some say that you have to be in a war to write about it. Read ST, then read Joe Haldeman's The Forever War for contrast - Haldeman fought in Vietnam and it shows. (Not addressed to Werewolf, who I assume has read that book as well.)

Its a good / bad film, and I love it.
I was it 2 weeks ago on sci-fi channel, mind you the special effects have dated badly!

Starship Troopers remains one of my favourite films to this day. It also weirdly makes me want to join the army...

Good points well made, as a long time Heinlein fan who discovered Haldeman much later I have to agree with you re their different perspectives, The forever war series portray the futility of war so well. It's also well documented that Heinlein's early work was written to appeal and thus sell to the readers of it's day with no longer term pretentions and so does reflect the anti communist sentiment in the USA at that time, it does have comedy overtones that the film picks up on and neither the book or film are intended to be taken seriously. It's a sfx b movie with comedy and boobies is meant to entertain, at least it's not as bad as Galaxyquest.

I loved the film, I don't think you have to take it so serious, action Great, Humour Great, Denise Richards GREATER.....
Didnt think much of the sequel though...
