Hey guys.

I'm thinking of getting a blackberry bold, but am slightly unsure how it all works with all the dataplans etc..

Right now I have a 5800, with o2 and I get unlimited data/web as part of my tarrif.

If i was to change my phone to a bold, would i have to pay more to use blackberrys features or would my existing data plan cut it?

Thanks :)

You will need a BIS plan ie Blackberry internet plan in order to get the push email function...without that the Bold is just another phone really. I think with the normal dataplan you can still use the internet..i have tmobile and pay £5 for the BIS and another £5 for the unlimited web n walk plan.

Best to ring up O2 and ask them.

Damn, so I might have to pay more? I'm on a pretty big tariff as it is..600mins 1000texts/web..

Yes i imagine you would have to pay more...unless you ring them up and ask them...they might be able to do you a better price plan with the BIS included.

By the way how much are you paying on that tariff??

Yea youll need the additional BIS plan. I get unlimited internet etc. with it though so you will not need that web plan. Im guessing yours is intergrated though so you will probably have to pay an extra fiver a month until you can change your contract.

My contract works out currently £13.66 a month with all that i mentioned above...

As to changing the data plan can I not just swap it over to the BIS plan(this includes unlim web also you say?)?

I'll have a chat with O2, see what they say tomorrow..

BIS plan doesnt include minutes etc. its just an internet bolt on service. Youll need it for Blackberry email, messenger etc.

If you are allowed a choice of boltons, you can opt for the Blackberry bolton which should sort you out.

Failing that simplicity for £20 p/m with BB bolton.

Awesome. So is the main difference between the unlimited O2 web and BB bolt on the fact that all the internet browsing goes through BB's APN's and also all the push email functions etc are available? Can you still use applications like Fring, Google Maps/Lattitude etc?

Is the internet on BIS 3G also?

What do you guys think about me ditching my 5800 in favour for a BB Bold?

A million questions..

With the BIS yes all internet traffic goes through the BB servers and you get the push email functionality as well...and yes to you can use those apps...i use google maps on my Bold.

3G is limited to the handset that your using so if you get the Bold then yes you will get 3G...if you get say the 8900 curve then you will only get GPRS or Edge as the 8900 isnt a 3G handset.

As for you ditching the 5800 for the Bold??..well it all depends on if you will use the push email functionality for a start...whether or not you prefer touchscreen to a qwerty keyboard and whether or not you want a more expensive and better handset.

What i suggest you do is pop down to an O2 store and see if they have a Bold on display and have a play with it...its a pretty big ie wide phone but i like the size of it. If o2 dont have one on display then go to a voda shop as they tend to have demo units running.

a lot of your q's can be answered if you pop over to the link in my sig.

The best place for all things Blackberry.

Cheers for the replies, keep forgetting about this thread!

Well I'm ditching the 5800 because I can't get used to the touchscreen, sure it's great but I can't fire off text messages like I used to be able to do quickly with a keypad!

Had a play with both the Bold and the Curve yesterday, my mates have both, and while I love the funtionality of the bold I really like the ergonomics of the Curve. The Bold is huge compared to the curve! This difference has sort of pushed me in the direction of the curve, but ultimately it will depend on what becomes available to me first!

The curve is a great phone...i like/love the form factor but the fact it lacks 3G means its much slower internet wise than the Bold...plus you cant surf on the net, make calls, send or receive texts, emails on the curve...now whether or not you need that is up to you...if you can live without those functions then the curve is for you...otherwise its the Bold.

Only thing the bold has over the curve is faster internet with 3G, but the curve does have wifi to help overcome this obstacle.
Curve has better screen, better camera, better form.

Id deffo go curve (8900) any day

I think Spawn meant to say "you can't surf the net / send emails whilst on a call" - the 8900 can do all of those things one at a time and all at once if you're connected to Wi-Fi. ;)

Go for the 8900 - the camera's better, EDGE on O2 is marginally slower than 3G for BlackBerry use (you'll only notice it on image heavy webpages) and the extra RAM in the 8900 also speeds things up. I've got all the BlackBerrys and the 8900 is my favorite by far. The standard O2 offer is a free 8900 with free BIS Unlimited bolt on on £35 tariffs only. I'm not sure if retention will give you a better deal or not if you push them.

Yup thats what i meant to say...thanks for clarifying that.

Hey guys. Well I have got a Bold from a friend, will have it in a few days now! Just wondering about a few things.

I've been reading on the net that I'll need O2 to release the PIN for the phone, am I right, is that something I do or my friend would do?

Also when I get the phone is it just a matter of calling O2 and telling them I have a Blackberry and I would like to change Bolt-on?

Thanks
