for 1280 x 1024 what would you get? the 8800GT 256MB, or the 9600GT 512MB?

he has a very tight budget and we've found both of the above second hand on the cheap, so which would you buy?

also i should say he refuses to consider getting an ATI card, and the 8800GT 512 is over budget.

ive also had a quick look at some 8800GTS 320's, but cant make my mind up.

any input would be appreciated,

thanks.

What is his 'tight budget'?

Got a 9600GSO second hand with an akasa cooler on it for £40 posted. When I was looking for it at the time (only a few months ago) you would occasionally see some 9800's go for £45-55 inc postage on auction sites and 8800's £35-45.

I play games at 1200x960 I'm using the 8800 GTS 320 right now and i've had the card for 2 years. It's a great card and I still love it. But i'm replacing it with a GTX 275.

The card is powerful but the lack of memory is starting to show. (I play gta4 and I had to reduce to 1152x868 to keep the eyecandy and the frame rates over 40) I'f i was on a budget i'd go for the GTX 250 or the 240. ATI have got an AMAZING card (for <£100) that i can't remember the name of right now

4850 is great value for money right now.

if less than that, you would need to look for used deals. The only other new card that is cheaper as far as i know is the 4670 gddr3, but its a considerable decrease in performance for about £20 less.
