You should have said you bought it in the UK and took it out on holiday.
Your spec doesn't exactly tally with being poor - student loan for the win I suppose
Student loans are annoying as hell! All my mates on my course get one and get a nice £2000 every couple of months.
None of them work to my knowledge apart from me and they all get more than me. They **** it up the wall and spend it on eeez and whizz!
I would abolish taxpayer funded student loans and adopt a US style system - it would sort the wheat from the chaff more.
I hate customs
The worst thing is the parcelforce fee on small items, £13 even if the taxes are 1 pence. Stuff gets seized randomly and held for days and days as well.
I got stung with £181.30...with a smarmy UPS driver that wasn't very helpful.
It's not too bad though as when i went onto the site i bought it from the price had been reduced by $100 so i am getting some money refunded and hopefully will be able to get some import duty back as the price on the customs was "quoted" wrong...
As i don't want to be in debt and had saved up to pay for the course.
If i knew what i know now i probably would have got one as the free time that im working would have been much better used studying!
Thing is the student loan company actually make money out of students. The interest rates are greater than inflation and therefore they actually make quite a bit of moolah out of each student by the time they've paid it off.
It is still at more generous terms than would be possible in the private sector AFAIK
eg. you don't have to repay it until you earn a certain amount.
I think it does but lower than market rates.
Although in a true comparison, no student would get a loan from the private sector without a job.

I would buy something completely ridiculous, so that it doesnt make your pc look/seem so bad an investment?

It's not necessarily £2000 every 'couple' of months. Mine's nowhere near that. And it's hardly free in any case:

Yes ~£15k a year, which if you don't earn after a degree, the loan is the least of your worries.

Bit of a no lose gamble though - either you get a well paid job and pay off the loan, or you don't get a well paid job and never have to pay it off. I don't think the general public can get a loan on those terms
