I've just received two brand new Xeon W5580s from Intel as a competition prize and I just want to go home and look at them. Question is what sort of money am I looking at to put a system together worthy of them, and could I just get away with new motherboard and memory?

My current system is:
C2D e7400
Asus P5Q Pro
4870 1GB
8gb pc8500
Antec P180
800W Seasonic PSU

Now I'm not a folder or anything, just a lucky gamer (hell I was hoping for the runner up prize of the Core i7s!) but I'm interested to see what you'd need to play with these and people's opinions.

Cheers, McB

Only consumer-ish board I know of that will house two of them is the SuperMicro X8DA3-0 that was in CustomPC recently, which will set you back about £470.

Still, considering you have about £3000 worth of CPU there, it's small price to pay.

I would think that your GPU and PSU should be fine, im not sure if your P180 is E-ATX which you would need as Xeon mobos tend to be a bit larger than standard ATX. So yes, mobo RAM and case I should say.

Sell one and use the funds to assemble the rest of the system :)

Alternatively, Asus will be releasing a dual nehalem atx (!) board in the near future which would be ideal

Sale them and spend 2.5k on a kicking i7 setup.
Alternatively as said you need a dual mobo which is £470, only supports 2 gfx cards in crossfire (no sli support) and you need two lot's of ram. each cpu has it's own ram

Yeah its tight in that P180 already ><

Next question, these are oem but what sort of cooler would you need for these? Would any 1366 i7 one fit?

Coming round to the sale idea and spooge half on i7 board upgrade, especially as other half now knows how much they are. It's a lot of money to be sat under my desk keeping my feet warm playing Peggle ;)

Thanks for all the bumf though.

cant u just run the W5580 in a normal x58 board ?, sell 1 of the chips and use the money to fund the rest of your rig, and apparantly those i7 xeons are highly binned so they will overclock REALLLY well

I have to agree with AcidHell2 on this one.

Selling those would allow you to build an awesome system that would handle any game. That's what I'd do.

Although not many people can say "Me? Oh I'm running two Xeons"

Chris.

Unfortunately we've got a lot of money to spend on our house at the moment so I'm gonna have to sell them both, nice as it would be to keep them. I can't put them in the MM so they'll be on an online auction site shortly if anyone is interested :)

Cheers

Sell them, that sort of multicore power is completely wasted, hell I would even go as far as saying to just pocket the cash.

AWESOME!!! Congrats!

Keep them, and build an insane computer. Just for bragging rights!
Also fold your face off now!

Wish I could mate, carpet is so damn expensive and nowhere near as exciting ><

PS Please buy my chips

Congratulations mate, shame you cant keep them but at least if you sell them you'll be able to get a good i7 system with the money.
