As per title.

Firstly, apologies for yet another 'Spec me a TV at £XXX' thread.

Anyway, I'm a n00b looking to buy a new TV. Not really fussed by outright resolution, just want something with excellent overall picture quality for mainly TV and watching films. I don't have a BR player, and will be using DVD as the video source. I do have an XBox 360 that I might consider buying a HD DVD drive for, so maybe something that would work well with this would be a bonus (in resolution terms).

As it stands I'm usually far more impressed with the overall quality of plasma screen TVs over LCD, but I'm willing to look at LCD should there be something worthwhile within budget.

So, what is out there that is in budget and (importantly) available from a reputable retailer, online or otherwise (just incase I have any issues)? I don't want to go somewhere with rubbish customer service as I've been there before with my current TV. I'm not looking for suggestions of retailers, just models that I can easily find that fit the bill.

Cheers!

Panasonic TX-37X10 plasma is probably your best bet and right on budget as well. You can get it with a Panasonic 5 year warranty from certain retailers. I'm starting to sound like a Panasonic rep. :D

What are the Samsung and LG 42" plasma screens like at a similar price point? I have a little flexibility in £££ to spend, but need a wall mount and in all don't want spend more than £600.

I've no idea about the Samsung and LG sets you mention but I have the Panasonic TX-42X10 (37X10's bigger brother :D) and I'm very happy with it, that's why I recommended the 37" ;).

Ok, cool. Cheers for your input.

I'll go and have a look at what's available and try to seperate the good TVs from the bad and go from there.

Plasma = Panasonic

Plain and simple. the only choices are what size and what resolution :)

At Richer for 720P sets: 37" is £500, 42" is £590 and 50" is £700. I would only consider spending the extra on a 1080P if you are imminently planning to build an extensive Blu-Ray libary as your main video source. For your planned usage 720P is just as good and saves a fortune.

I may have just acidentally a Panasonic TXP42X10B - is this bad?

I can't wait to get it!:D

It replaces a knackered Panasonic 28" WS CRT with a problem where the tube randomly goes green. I've wanted something to replace it for over 2 years!

\o/

Lovely stuff ;)

Good choice, it's what I ordered a week ago. Unfortunately it still hasn't arrived so I have a brand new stand in the living room and no tv :(

At least I got the extra I paid for fast delivery back....

Here's hoping you have better luck :)

I also have a slightly knackered 28" crt which I'm looking to replace with a 42" or 50". I know the sensible thing would be to wait till xmas when all the deals come in but thats way too far away.

I hope so too. I have been given a delivery date of next Monday, but knowing how I've been treated by similar etailers before regarding unfulfilled orders, I'm not looking on the bright side TBH. :p

DOOO IT!:D

Christmas is miles away. Why spend your summer evenings basking in the back garden with a beer, when you could be couped up in a stuffy lounge, in the dark with a massive TV?!
