Hey people,

Im coming up to 20yrs old with 0 years NCB and im looking for a first car thats hopefully fun and under £3000. ;)

So far I've settled on a Ford Focus 2.0l zetec. Fairly nippy and I can get it insured for quite a reasonable price (£1200 on confused and possiblly lower by phone.)

But I have gone off the idea in pursuit of RWD action! I'm considering paying slightly more on the insurance and less on the car and getting maybe an old Toyota Celica, Nissan 200sx or something similar. I have also come across tempting Porsche 924 and 944's (the poor mans Porsche) from the late 80's which may be insurable under 'Classic' insurance, but i have no idea.

If anyone has any ideas for me they will be most appreciated! Also, rather typically, I'm a fan of speed and engines working well, but as always im constrained by insurance companies! :)

Forget the porsche's they will be moneypits. If I were you and really wanted rwd i would go for a 200sx. £3k would get you a decent example.

A 2.0 focus won't be fun to drive imo.

Focus are mean't to be faily decent at handling, especially if lowered. But fun? thats another question! A poors mans porsche would eat the wallet out of my hand, but would retain the value if I sell after a few years.
A 200sx may be the way forward, i could even get down with the drifting crews :P

you might want to read the FAQs about sigs..

anyway, 200sx or e36 328i sport :]

Do you need rear seats? If not have you considered an MR2 or MX5?

I wouldn't of thought an old Porsche would be for you to be honest they are best left to the enthusiasts as it would cost a fortune to run and resale isn't something you should be worried abount on a sub £3k car anyway really.

edit: Isn't the Boxster supposed to be the 'poor mans Porsche?' (stupid phrase anyway)

I've just found out about the sigs.... whoops, will change in a min!

Funny you should mention MR2's and Mx-5's, two of my friends just bought them! I was hoping to keep up with them, and still have room for more passengers!!

E36 328 sport is a good shout, £3k will get you a nice example.

or e36 328i sport :]

Meh.

Grab an SE & save a few quid. ;) - Mine cost £900, obviously a later one will be more, but £3k buys scruffy M3's never mind 2.8 Sports.

I know which I'd throw £3k at.*

* yes, I'm mad and fortunate enough to not have to worry about insurance.

Because having a budget of £3k and throwing that at a scruffy M3 is a good idea.. :p

Well, you only live once & @ 20, I doubt he'd keep it in one piece long enough to worry about running costs....... ;):D

But yes, obviously an M3 would be a Cuckoo idea - I can't help thinking less of the budget on a 328i SE & the rest toward running costs & insurance makes more sence - to the OP - than opting for a Sport.

(Can you tell I've been drinking?) :o

The insurance on an M3 at 20 is just going to be impractically high tbh, 328 sure, but not an M3, I'd hazard a guess you'ed be paying at least £3k insurance with no ncbs etc, if you haven't had your license long, as in just qualified, then it'll be worse than that.

Not to mention the fact, I wouldn't suggest an M3 as a first car for the plain and simple reason that inexperience could kill you fast in a car like that, kind of like handing your teenage son a scythe for his first shave. I'd get used to driving in something a bit more modest first, really I would, then when you have some real experience under your belt, step up the power :D

I should have made my M3 recomendation a tad more tounge in cheek I guess.... ;)

I know i'm going to get hammered for this but... an MG ZR+ 160. Yes the interior is crap and it's a rover and it will have HGF issues. But, it will be easier to insure than a Porche or old BMW or Celica or possibly even the Focus. It will be fun to drive as its a warm hatch with a nice revvy engine. The other options, except the Focus, will need repairs and have considerable running costs and all this is likely to need is servicing and max of £500 for HGF which, if you take out the AA breakdown repair cover at £65, can be done under warranty.
