Hey guys. Thinking of buying the laptop in the title, 4GB, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz etc etc. Was just wondering what peoples views are on this laptop and dell laptop's in general. They seem to be cheaper directly off the official website than from retail outlets etc as well. Reason for this?

I have noticed that Dell laptops are rarely discussed within these forums. Is there a reason for this?

Chears,
Tom.

I've been thinking of getting a Studio 15 for about 12 months now and have recently been looking at the new 15.6" version.

They seem to have made a number of changes, so hopefully this will be a bit less problematic.

They got a number of deals on at the moment last night I was really tempted, then I came across a 10% off voucher if you spend £699 or more, so I finally caved in and ordered one.

Arrives in about 2 weeks

Yeah thats the one i've been looking at mate.

Been looking at them for a while meself, was orginally going to buy the new Inspirons but then the Studio's came out so it's just a case of waiting for me I think.

If you remember give me a message or something if you wouldn't mind and tell me what you think of it. :) Chears :)

Anyone else?

Tom.

My sister needs a new laptop for general use and The Sims 2+3, and I spent Sunday afternoon with her, trawling up and down Tottenham Court Road looking at many. However the new Studio 15 looks like a great compromise on specs for £699:

2.4Ghz Intel P8600,
ATI 4570,
High resolution LED lit screen (1920x1080),
250Gb 7200rpm HDD

With the 10% off voucher, this would be fantastic value. However, I am still a little worried about the performance of the graphics card in games. Does anyone have any experience of it?

They're pretty well discussed, but bear in mind they are a competitor to OCUK, who strangely enough, also sell PCs and laptops :)

Studio 15's are great, as long as you get the new revision with the 4 series ati cards.
Get it off their own website and customise it how you like, retail is always going to be more expensive.

Dells are discussed on OcUK, you just need to go back a few pages.

Ok, my sister just ordered one for £650 on the button. Options:

Red finish
2.4Ghz Intel P8600
High resolution LED screen (1920x1080)
4Gb RAM
250Gb 7200rpm HDD
Free Logitech V220 cordless mouse
Vista 64bit

Thoughts?

I have an XPS 16 and it's a great laptop, plenty of power and a cracking screen (1080 RGB LED version). Came in less than £600 via the dell outlet store.

I don't think it's a problem talking about Dell but mods please feel free to edit/delete if it is.

I have a Dell Studio 1537 and it's horrible. It's gone back to Dell to get repaired again.

Mine too, the media buttons have gone again, I've got the on-site service but the tech they sent out last month was so ******* useless I didn't want to let him back in the house.

What's yours gone back for?

I like mine on the whole, but the media buttons have never been right and the service is rubbish.

Well it went back because, the CTRL key stopped working reliably, the DVD drive died, and the media buttons weren't right. It's come back, DVD drive fixed, CTRL key working, touch buttons still not working right, and now, it's come back with a new fault, the Screen has little white blotches. :(

I'm about to get my third set of media buttons. I'm not confident. :(

Is this a well known fault?

dell has released a new firmware which people are saying fixes the problem with the media keys..

For those who are still having this problem, this might help.

Problem: Media Control Buttons Disfunction on Dell Studio 1535/1536/1537

Description: Media control buttons on Dell Studio 1535/1536/1537 systems may report intermittent disfunction issues.

The typical failures may include:
1. Media control buttons automatically light on.
2. Optical disk automatically ejected.
3. Some media control buttons have no response.

Solution:
Update firmware for system hinge cover.

Create a bootable CD:

NOTE: Please make sure you have CD imaging software installed in your system, which can create a bootable CD based on ISO image format.

1. Download the firmware installation file FM7_X0D.ISO, and save it in your system.
2. Run the CD imaging software to create a bootable CD based on this FM7_X0D.ISO file.

Take Roxio Creator as an example for the procedure.

1. Insert a blank writable CD in your system.
2. Open Roxio Creator.
3. Click File menu.
4. Go to New Project / Copy / Burn Disc Image to Disc.
5. Click Browse.
6. Add this FM7_X0D.ISO file from the location you saved.
7. Click button to continue, till complete the CD creation.

Flash firmware:
NOTE: Please make sure A/C power is being used while updating the firmware.

1. Insert this CD in your system.
2. Reboot the system, and enter one-time boot menu by pressing F12.
3. Boot from the CD drive.
4. The CD will autorun and update the firmware.
5. Once completed, screen will show pass and Flash Successful.
6. Shut down the system.
7. Remove A/C power cable and battery.
8. Replug in A/C power cable and battery to continue normal operation.

NOTE: Please make sure to remove A/C power and battery once firmware update completed.
