This 4 year old thread has been revivied, presumably as some kind of zombie themed undead thing for Halloween.

Make yourself a cup of tea, this could take a while.

The general consensus (and I strongly agree) is that the Vectra is a far inferior car to the likes of the Ford Mondeo, Honda Accord, etc.

i've picked up on that vibe, but would like to know why :) and with regards to grunt (and insurance) what would be a better choice.

It's a pretty good car other than the terrible driving dynamics, rubbish interior, plethora of cheap plastics, tractor engine, etc.

Yes the ST TDCi is a fantastic car a drivers rep mobile if anything, the vectra just dosen't compare if you want something that handels. Or want the better asthetics/build quality

TDCi....go a 'boom! boom! BOOOOM!'.

(that's the sound of the injectors/fuel pump/DMF exploding)

Doubt that you'll find an ST TDCi for £4-5k anyway.

If it has to be a diesel, for this money it has to be an Accord/A4/A6 or E46 if you remove the swirl flaps. All will be an intergalactic mileage though.

Better to go petrol.

Don't listen to these anti-Vauxhall imbeciles, most of whom have never driven a Vectra and simply post this nonsense because its the "in thing" to do here in Motors on OcUK.

I have a '54 plate 3.0 V6 CDTi SRi Vec. What do ya want to know about?.

the 3.0 diesel unit in the vectra is quite reliable

unlike the 1.9 Tdi unit which seems to break down almost as much as the one in the mondeo ST Tdci.

when driven in the real world, what is like on fuel. what toys do you have in it, what toys do you wish it had. would you buy another? any major problems with, what sort of mileage do suspension bushes and other consumables begin to expire ?

Normal everyday driving will see anywhere between 38-42mpg. It will however dip if you have a heavy right foot, just as it would with any other car.

Mine is fairly standard spec, they changed a few things that were standard spec at certain model years. Mine has :-

Aircon, cruise, traction control, factory fit sat nav, auto wipers, 12v aux plugin point, as well as the usual stuff. It didn't have factory fit HID headlights so I retro fitted them. ;)

There's nothing it's missing that I don't wish it had, except maybe for the HID's but as i said I covered that by retro fitting them.

Would I buy another?. I have no idea!!. I am currently trying to work out how I can best afford a new Aprilia RSV4 and had not considered changing my Vec at any time soon. That said, if I was to have to change it tomorrow I would probably buy something different. Not because I am not happy with the way the Vec performs, but just because I fancy something else.

I've had the Vec for about 3 years now and its been a very good car during that period. It's got plenty space, been very reliable and has a reasonable turn of speed. I had a DTUK CRD2 Tuning Box on it for about a year and it certainly madea fair bit of difference to performance but I took it off and sold it a while ago.

Components wise as far as lifespan, it's no different to any other mainstream saloon car.

If you want any more specific answers, fire away or hop on over to the Vec-C Forums and have a sniff around there.

No personal experience but they are generally considered pretty crap...

a 3.0 v6 diesel is an interesting prospect though - one drove past me the other day, certainly made an interesting noise!

Later facelift models arent bad cars imo, dash is still a bit meh, but the seats are good, but the driving the car, it does feel like you have a big heavy engine upfront. Nice noise for a diesel tho.

If you want a large diesel, buy a Volvo S80 or V70. The D5 in particular is a great engine for relaxed motorway cruising, and i've yet to find a car with better seats for covering distance.
