Moving into a Fortress with room to spare

good choice, amazing the difference it makes even tho the hardware is exactly the same.

yes, I am very pleased with it so far. I was worried the little board would look lost in the case but the all black interior helps a lot.

My wife even likes it, although she says it should go on the floor not the desk.

It's a bit surreal seeing an older setup in the fortress, have to admit. The case looks fantastic however, real nice bit of kit.

What's next? :p

The problem is as you get older time goes quicker, so when you stop and think how long have I had that motherboard and CPU?

Answer: Two and a half years.

This months salary is being spent on a holiday, so July pay day: New motherboard and CPU.

This leaves me with a problem, AM2+ & keep my memory or AM3 have to buy new memory. What do you guys think budgets probably £200-250. Need a CPU for that too.

Haha, I appreciate your honesty!

For around £200 a setup like this (obviously build up yourself and add/subtract relevant bits) from intel isn't a bad option. I can't say I know how the AMD equivalents compare, the last AMD chip I had was an Athlon XP.

I can't say I had really considered the Intels properly, may be I should. Recently all the gab has been about Phenom 2 and i7, (i7 being out of my range). I have been stung by buying kit on its way out like 779 now is. So thats a bit of a concern, where as all current am3 CPUs work on the AM2+ boards, but then who knows how long that will go on for.

Nice rebuild mate.

I dont know about the amd boards/cpus but if you were going to go intel i would look at something like a bit higher end then the kit posted above, like a P45 or X48 and push for quadcore/higher end dual core. Then get a GTX 260 if you can afford it.

Though it depends what sort of budget you will have. ;)

i have 6 of those hot-swap things in my case (called CP05 i think?) and i dont like that they have both a male and female connector on them. it means there is unused stuff sitting at the side of my case which has resulted in the side panel not being flush aginast the case shell.

i think im going to chop off the extra connectors as i have no need for them, and all they do is take up space.

although they are still very handy if you dont want to go into the side ever again :D

Can you not daisy chain them i.e. you power goes into the top one the extra female bit goes into the male on the next one down. That's how I though it would work, although I have since take mine out and power both my hard disks of one of the modular cables that came with the Corsair.

I would ideally like to be at least 3Ghz as most people on here have had that sort of power for years. I have been pondering these:

That way I can keep my existing Corsair XMS2 DDR2 Ram, have a good clocking chip and have an upgrade path to Quad Phenom when they become cheaper.

New graphics will have to wait. Until the months after.
