diesel vs petrol power

the argument i am trying to make is that if you take a diesel and a petrol with identical power outputs, the diesel is (usually) better.
this has nothing to do with price or whatever. i am solely interested in bhp.

the same can be said to fox - perhaps the 530d and 530i were similarly priced (i can't remember), but the engines are not comparable. the 530i is better than the 530d in almost every way. compare the 530d to the 528i (both with 193bhp), and then maybe we have a different story

we are talking performance figures, not price or placement within the range.

Indeed, fox seems to be trying to skew the argument and play the straw man...

nah, its common knowledge that they perform poorly on a car engine as they are not designed for the app, and jenvy's etc will perform much better

Except it isn't common knowledge. They might not be designed for the application but they do generally work well on car engines.

They most certainly are. They sat in the range alongside each other at pretty much the same price. If you wanted a petrol, you bought the 530i, if you wanted a diesel, you bought the 530d. How much more comparable do you wish to get?

People didn't go 'I would like to purchase a 193bhp car, what are my options, oh look I can only buy a 530d'. They said 'I would like to spend £32,000 on a 5 Series, what are my options' or 'I fancy a 530, what are my options'.

The 528i and 193bhp 530d were never sold alongside one another, they were not even found in the same version of the car.

yeh great, but my only argument is that with two engines with THE SAME POWER OUTPUT, the diesel is more likely to be better..

**** whether they're supposed to be equal or not. that's not my point.

But that logic why not take two cars with similar torque outputs? Say a 1.9TDI and a 2.7 T petrol?
Nothing to do with price or whatever. I'm solely interested in Nm.

mjt I hope that mimicking doesn't come across as ill mannered or disrespectful to you it's not meant to.

How is that relevant? You dont buy cars based on specific power output, nobody does that. Surely comparing the diesel with its petrol equivilent in the range is the most sensible and logical way of doing things?

Quite, but these petrol fan boys, just wont let them selves hear the truth :D

Agreed (i mean faster in a straight line & mpg) but with the same torque output the petrol will be better?

If you're going to compare two cars it's really best to pick them at the same price point, that way you ensure a fair test.

probably

i guess there are only a handful of cars where the diesel and petrol equivalents are equal on both price and output..

Because it would be completely pointless? When would anyone wish to chose between purchasing an Audi with either a 1.9 TDI or a 2.7 Twin Turbo petrol in it? It's a comparison no sane person would ever do?

lolwut, by design, the diesel will always have more torque at a given bhp :p
