What year(s) ford mondeos have a problem with the inlet manifold or are all petrol mondeo engines affected by this?
Thanks in advance guys :)

I took the inlet manifold of my wifes 87k 2001 2.0 Duratec Ghia X and the spindles had no play at all, so it's not a deffinate that it will have this problem.

Easy way to check is to put a screw driver end at the front of the inlet manifold and your ear on the handle - I've you can hear a loud tapping whilst the engine is running then it's likey the spindle on the secondary butter fly need fixing, removing or a new manifold.

I normally just remove the secondary butterflies and the spindle and araldite the resulting hole - doesn't seem to affect how the car drive, mpg etc.

I beg to differ i know soone who has a 2004 mondeo and the manifold was changed not long ago as it was about to fall apart :)

What was going to fall apart as a specific issue was fixed? It is still entirely possible for the part to fail, albeit with less frequency.

I have read somewhere that it affects all mondeos both diesels and petrol

Yes it does, mine just had a gearbox failure and I had to change the flywheel as well because it's getting too much play.

Petrol ones do fail, just slower than diesel because of the lower torque.

Mine also had the loose flaps problem. When I took it off, it had about 5mm of play which is no good. I also think it's better to install new valves instead of removing them. You can get the valve kit from ford for about £25 which I think is cheap enough to have the problem properly fixed. After fixing mine, I found it to have much better low range torque.

Mine is a 2.0l btw.
