Beef Jerky

I am sat here with two 250g bags of biltong. One chillie and one garlic.

Bought from ebay and arrived today.

Total price was about £15 give or take.

Going down nicely with my bottle of French wine.

Ouch, that's expensive.

Get original beef biltong - £13 for 500g. It's worth every penny.

Yep, a lot of South African stores/other shops (if they sell it) like to rip people off with their biltong. An SA store near where I live charges £7 per 100g. £70 per kilogram :/

Hi there,

Can you recommend a good supplier? :)

They also sell boerewors which completely owns any UK sausage available ;)

@Craig321 That is £15.80 for 500g of two flavours, so it does compare to £13 for 500g
of origional.

Ah true, didn't see you said it was 2x 250g bags. I'd recommend original to anyone wanting to try biltong for a first time though - just make sure it's from a decent supplier :)

I understand entirely.:)

The one i have bought this time is not the best, seems a bit to fatty for my taste.
I like cheewy, but not fatty. I have tried a lot so maybe i am fussy because i notice the difference.:)

At least the wine is up to standard, only half a bottle left tho, damn.

how does biltong differ from beef jerky ?

MW

Biltong is spiced/salted chunks of meat that have been air-dried and then cut into shavings/chunks/sticks.

Jerky is marinated meat that is cut into smaller pieces/strips first before being dried.

Biltong > Jerky

Droewors is dried, spiced beef sausage, and is the yummiest thing on the planet! :D

Garlic or peri-peri droewors pwns!

Biltong and Jerky are awesome. So awesome.

I work with a South African, and he had some shipped over for his birthday straight from SA. /Drool...

I love Biltong (one of my five top favourite foods). Biltong is also better the Beef jerky. Although if you like jerky, there is also a Chinese version (sweet marinated beef) not sure what its called. My mate used to always bring back some for me from Taiwan.

Droëwors is also awesome!! This thread has made me sooooo hungry now.

We had boerewors on the braai on Sunday - mmmmmmmmmmm :D
In fact, I think I may go order some more.

The problem is, once I check out the boerewors, I then drift off into the droewors section, then biltong, then snacks (and I end up getting cheese niknaks, fritos and peppermint crisps) and the chutney and.....before I know it, I've spent £120 and I feel really guilty (unil it turns up!).

But just to sum up, beef jerky is a very poor substitute for biltong. My last mass order for South African goods was from Biltong Direct - they called straight after I made my order to confirm and then shipped it almost immediately - really good service. I've used just about all of the big names but BD had better prices (for my checkout) and the quality was comparable - and I seem to recall that I paid by PayPal, which was just so much easier.
