i video encode a lot of divx to dvd and have just purchased a new i7 system from over clockers which is still in the "warehouse queue" any ideas how much of a difference this processor will make to the encoding times in something like tempgenc?

a huge amount

Did a test on another forum and encoding a 700mb avi in Nero 8 with 3d menu enabled:

E8600 @ 4.4ghz = 22 mins
Q9650 @ 4.4ghz = 14 mins
920 @ 4.2ghz = 12 mins

E8600 @ 4.4ghz = 22 mins
Q9650 @ 4.4ghz = 14 mins
920 @ 4.2ghz = 12 mins
Those results if accurate are quite interesting! :)

I would have expected the Intel® Core™ i7 to be a lot faster when encoding due to massive memory bandwidth and Hyper-threading?

Eight logical processor vs two real cores and its not even 100% faster :p

It was all using the same movie file, probably slightly different versions of software (Nero) but don't think that could really be controlled when someone posts a forum thread and asked what other people get! :p We all used the same settings in Nero though

The Q9650 and the E8600 had the same FSB speed, but the E8600 was on a DDR2 platform, the Q9650 was my result and running DDR3 ram.

Not sure what the i7 was running, will edit this post if i later find the thread.

Would imagine Nero is not the most multi-threaded application wrote for this test as well and other software out there will get a larger difference.

Results are pretty accurate though and pretty much show the difference in quad vs dual encoding

Where can I see those results on the forum? When I encode .avi to dvd format using the burn to hard drive setting, it takes me 18 mins at 4ghz core i7 920. Were the other persons settings lower in nero?

Can't give forum link as its a competitors forum. We all used the same settings though in Nero.
