Bangkok --> Pattaya

howsertrading probally speaks the truth as the guys who told me were typical Brits abroad types drinking bottles of beer at 11am and throwing 500b around like it was nothing.

Pattaya is a deffo place to miss unless you like paying for sex or seeing obease middle aged european men holding hands with young boys. I had the misfortune of ending up their for one night.

I got the train from Pattaya to Bangkok. It cost around 30baht and was possibly the best 4 hour train journey I've ever had.

edityooo

When speaking to others out there the price of a taxi straight from outside the airport terminal was around 800baht.

How often did you see these men with little boys?

Friends live there etc and havant seen a thing, you go there for one night and see men with boys.

The only place my friend and I came across this sort of thing was actually in BKK, where my friend got offered a lady, then a man(with picture) which after he declined both got offered a boy. This was on entrance to Soi cowboy.

Pattaya does have a bad name though, they are trying to clamp down on this side of things.
Drugs seem to be getting looked into as well with a few big raids last few months on clubs with drug tests, guess they got behind on paying off the police :p

Not trying to defend Pattaya as being super clean as it obviously isnt, its just you see it everytime. Post about thailand, quickly followed by a ladyboy/pedo post, half the time by someone that hasnt even been there, or by someone that just got very unlucky.

My cousin and her boyfriend saw a few old men with young Thai boys and girls in Pattaya, it was enough to shorten their stay there and travel on elsewhere

It really is as plain as day - granted nowhere is perfect with this regard in Thailand but if I had two weeks there I'd definitely head straight for Phangan (and did exactly this on May 1st).

I'd stick to Bangkok - it's easy to avoid any seedy stuff, and there's some great sophisticated bars there which are well worth a visit, as well as temples, markets etc. I've not been to Pattaya, but most people say it's really dodgy these days.

Ok, if you want to listen to anyone on this thread, you should listen to me because I live in Pattaya. A lot of people seem to have preconceptions (misconceptions imo) about Pattaya. A 1 night or a 1 day visit seems to make people think they are experts on the place, or they listen to what their cousins boyfriends auntys housemaid told them.

Ive never seen any man holding a little boys hand unless its his son.
Yes it is seedy....if you want seedy! If you dont, then no problem, its still a very pleasant place with lots to do, friendly people (like all of Thailand) and the nightlife is excellent.

If you take a taxi (taxi meter outside the terminal) it will cost around 1200B. Its also easy to get a public aircon bus, like Cryingfreeman posted, which I would take if I was on a budget. One the way back to Suvarnabhumi you can book a taxi at most travel agents in Pattaya for 800B.

If you like shopping, check out the new Central Festival Plaza on beach road, it puts most European malls to shame. 2 floors of restaurants, awesome cinema (£3 for a ticket) and lots of big name shops.

Obviously you have to check out Walking Street for the nightlife, several good clubs including Lucifer and Insomnia.

Theres also go karting, several gun ranges, Muay Thai fights on every week, watersports like jetskiing, scubadiving, day trips out to Koh Larn island.

I recommend you stay in one of the hotels on Beach Road or Second Road. Ive stayed in the Amari Orchid for 2 weeks when I first got here, its at the North End of Beach Road, away from the crowd, but only a short baht bus journey to Walking Street/Central Pattaya. Other good hotels are the Siam Garden and Marriot. Stay at the Hard Rock if you want busy, they have good pool parties in the evening.

If you want cheaper accomodation then theres plenty. Its low season too so everywhere has room.

If you have anymore questions etc send me an email :)

Why would people anybody make these stories up? there is nothing to gain from it

I trust the opinion of my relatives and friends, they tell things how they are rather than sugar coat it, they have never claimed to be so called "experts" , all they have done is report what they have seen with their own eyes

Just because somebody hasn't seen something does not mean it isn't going on, maybe you are living there under some kind of blinkered misconception of the place and do not notice these things?

Without wanting to get drawn into an argument about what your family has seen; I never said anyone made anything up. Im in Pattaya every day and I havent seen any child sex trade. Neither have any of the 100 or so other expats I work with.
Pattaya authorities have worked hard to crack down on any child prostitution. However I never said it doesnt go on. Im sure it does, just like it does in other parts of the world, but what I am saying is that you dont see old men holding little kids hands except those of their own childs. Its not that prolific, unlike Phon Penh etc.
Im not living under any misconceptions. I came here to work with no preconceptions and I have made my own opinions based on my first hand experience, living and working with Thai people in Pattaya. I wouldnt sugar coat anything, I have nothing to gain from doing so.

TBH the constant 'hustling' from practically everyone in Pattaya did get on my nerves the first day/night. But 2nd day discovered, if you can say the better side with a 2hr ATV tour of the countryside, karting & gun range (recommend the shotgun ;)). We'd traveled from Bangkok but by taxi which was included in the Pattaya hotel cost. For us this was better means since had heavy luggage & from there it was straight to Suvarnabhumi airport for our very early morning flight.

Also noticed the 40+ (more like 60+) with young Thai's :D But ignored them since did not get in each others way.

Thanks for that panthro, much appreciated.

I may stay in the Amari Orchid for a night or two, the rooms look really nice. But tbh I was hoping for something a little closer to the 1000-1200 baht mark :D Know anything about the "welcome plaza hotel"? I hear that's pretty good value for money.

Also, are electronics cheap out there? I need a new camera, but I'm guessing I'd be better waiting and getting one there, rather than paying UK prices before I go?

Panthro: you live and work in pattaya? I hate you :D

People just so friendly there I love it.

I find the bars in walking street sometimes a bit to 'in ya face' so like finding the more relaxed bars off the main rat run.

Although sometimes I pluck enough courage to walk down Soi 6, hell sometimes I even make it to the other end :p :D . Seek needs to try this road on his visit :D

The Soi 6 girls look crazy! And from what I've seen there is lots of loud 'squawking' on that street. :D

Looks like there's a few good bars though. Even an English themed one (called "the nelson", or something like that. Maybe it was the "queen vic", I can't remember. Something along those lines though).
