diesel vs petrol power

Hang on Robbie, are you saying that people are going to the trouble of transplanting expensive HDI engines into old 205's? why? why would you go to the expense and complications of installing a modern diesel engine into an old car when it would be far easier, and you would get better performance by transplanting the MI or even GTI6 lump, not to mention it would be cheaper.

Care to show link some HDI based 205's?

At the mo, diesels seem to be the better option when it comes to those of us limited to new 'mundane' cars. Given the choice, when MPG isnt an concern, Petrol all the way for me.

Ermm, not really. If your car made 300 Nm @ 3000rpm and 270 hp @ 6000rpm, it would be slower than the same car with 400 Nm @ 3000rpm and 200 hp @ 4000rpm. BHP is a much better measure to use, if nothing else, to guage a cars performance than torque is.

So how do you weigh the usefulness of torque against that of HP when making a decision between two engines?

some one else that hasn't got a clue what there on about, it also ironic you calling the hdi 2.0 an expensive conversion, when over it you suggest a gti-6 lump :p

hdi 2.0's can be bought complete for sub £300

oh and :

Why would modify your car to be a diesel, why?

You're right, I dont have a clue, to me its a completely pointless 'upgrade' when you could transplant a better petrol engine if modding is your thing.Adding extra complicated electronics into an old frenchie isnt always the best idea:p

Could you please point me to a HDI engine for 300 notes, im being serious, mail in trust.

I have a BMW 118D (143 BHP) arriving end of the month and when its stationary it sounds like a tractor. but driving it feels like a petrol, and I think its pretty much on par with the 118 petrol. Oh and I get 45-70MPG. I have no problems with a diesel, but would still like another scooby in the future.

dude, just look on an auction sight or phone around the breakers, i was offered one with 60k for £175, with ecu etc

This thread won't die.

Diesel is like marmite, some hate it and some love it. Personal preference,

A petrol head wouldn't replace a 205 GTi engine with a diesel! only a diesel lover would transplant one.

yeh but with an hdi lump 170 bhp is achievable with little more than a £200 remap, chuck a different turbo on, and over 200 bhp is available

Its not going to suddenly turn a 205 into a boat, I doubt that would be possible. But I you can't tell me it doesn't negatively affect the handling in any way.

Show me some figures of the weights of the engines, and I'll happily be prooved wrong.

someone has said that a 2.0hdi was weighed on 306.net or similar site, and it weighed less than a gti-6 lump

I dont hate diesels, I loved my XUD9, awesome engine, but I would set about to modify any car, and look to replace the engine with a Derv, stinka you mention modding, I could also mod the petrol could I not?

What 'someone said' on a forum does not equate to fact.

It's not an awesome upgrade, you are way too enthusiastic about diesel without actually showing me any proof. How would a squeeze 200bhp out of a diesel without spending silly money and creating a thick layer of smog over London.

yes but to get a genuine 200+bhp out of a gti 6 would be very expensive.

look on cliosport .net 182's are rarely getting over 200 bhp even with throttle bodies. you cant just stick cams in and chuck a set of bodies on a standard gti-6 lump, it will last about 5 minutes, the bottom end wont take the thrash

Stick a diesel in a 182? I hope you are not going to suggest this next as I will bleed from my eyes.

lol, my ex mrs car was a '52 plate 172, one of the best handling FWD hatches i've ever driven, we were recommended to buy it on this very forum ;)

Good. It's a cracking car with a cracking engine. Proof that certain engines suit certain cars. Diesels are detuned at the factory to meet emissions standards so all your doing is spending money to claim back power at the expense of economy and the environment ;) You don't need more power in the 182 anyway.

You ALWAYS need more power ;)

If you are that bothered about power, time to turn to the jap side mate, you buy froggy cars for the well balanced and tuned chassis, with an ideally suited engine;)
