Intel core i7 920 Nehalem retail £246.09

Intel core i7 920 DO stepping (SLBEJ) Nehalem OEM £227.99

What's the difference and which is the better chip?

The DO stepping is better for overclocking and if you're gonna use an aftermarket cooler there is no real need to go retail imo

Thanks,I will change my order tomorrow morning.
Lucky that it's still in the warehouse queue!
Will have to ring first thing tomorrow morning.
The week's offer looks good.

Thanks much appreciated.
Hopefully I can ctach them first thing tomorrow morning.
I hate doing exchanges in the post!

Just bear in mind that you don't get the HSF with an OEM CPU and you will have to buy a HSF separately (which costs money, unless you already have a LGA1366 HSF).

Just for information, I would not touch an OEM chip purchased from a well-known auction site, with a 10' barge pole.

The reason I mention this is that precuring OEM chips from said well-known auction site is a luck of the draw, since the less dishonest sellers buy them in bulk, cherry pick the good overclockers for themselves, and sell the lower- performing overclockers on. You also don't know if they have used them in an LN2 set up for suicide runs and are then selling them on as 'new'.

If you are buying the OEM from a reputable shop (and I presume that you are) then you should be ok.

I have ordered all the necessary components form overclockers today.
I am doing water cooling on the CPU using a swiftech apogee GTZ block with a 240mm black ice radiator. So overclocking is definately on the menu.
Hopefully overclockers don't sell me duff chip!
But they are doing an offer on a core i7920 DO retail with world in conflict game.

Which MB and RAM are you using?

Have a gander at this for cool temperatures, albeit on a I7 975, EVGA Classified MB and a very expensive water cooling set up.

This isn't mine by the way, and he doesn't say what the ambient temps are, but even so.

btw he's the Cases and Cooling Mod on another forum I'm a member of. He's an expert in water cooling and has a I7 920, 965 and 975, 2x W5580s and a 32nm Westmere on the way (he must spend thousands on components per year and gets CPUs 6+ months before us mere retail mortals).

I am using an asus P6T deluxe V2 and G SKILL DDR3 1600MHz,timings 8-8-8-21.
The case is a coolermaster cosmos s.

3.6 hopefully.
Reliability is my number one concern, always.
Just bought a GTX295 to compliment it.
I had a 4970X2 but I found the GTX is cooler and quieter.

Did I blink and miss something? I didn't even know the 4890 X2 had been released.

Or did you mean HD 4870 X2?

If you did, then I know what you mean, since my HD4870 X2 sounds like a hair dryer if the fan speed goes higher than 50%. It will get even noisier inside my case in a couple of weeks time, when I place the order for the second one for some Quad-fire goodness.

Supposedly the I7 really shines with multiple GPU set ups.

Sorry,it was a 4870X2 but had to be replaced within 2 weeks,overheating.
Fantastic card for a fantastic price.
But the stock 27% fan speed isn't enough.
After using it the back of the PC was hot were the GTX295 is always warm.
