gaming in uni halls

This will depend totally on the universities internet usage policy. When i was a uni (UEA) in halls (5 years ago) it was allowed but P2P file transfer was not. I cant comment on other unis though.

Yup, depends totally on their policy. When I was in halls, we had a 1mbit connection per room, which me and my mate regularly abused for warez and online gaming. Never once did anyone complain.

I could when I was in halls. The tinternet there was uber fast! Plus another bonus was you could connect to everyones librarys on itunes! Basically I gigantic collect of pron!

As said before, totally depends on university, or the student accommodation you choose.

Be prepared even if it is allowed for certain ports to be blocked, steam/VOIP might not work etc.

we had a 45mb connection that was restricted but we used to tunnel out through the firewall. I'd imagine certain ports are blocked to restrict gaming :(

Varies uni to uni. I'm at Lougborough and there are no websites blocked, most ports are open. I rapidshare about 10GB per week ;) p2p software works but if they catch you you get a 'warning', torrents also work but you get a warning for that too.
Games all work :D

HOWEVER, my friends at Newcastle have a major lockdown! Loads of websites are blocked, p2p and torrents don't work, steam won't even open! + all the ports for games are blocked.
Windows Live messenger webcam doesn't work...that's how bad it is!

Luck of the draw really!

In the halls at my old uni, we use to have 1mb/sec up/down at all times so downloading various stuff at 1mb/sec was amazing this was per room aswell in a shared house of six. But now at my other uni residence i get 2.4mb/sec so depends where you go.

Yeah at Edinburgh Uni most of the flats/dorms all you could get was http and browser based stuff, no p2p, torrent and most games didnt work but the internet that worked was blindingly fast, though within the buildings where unrestricted LANs so needless to say a lot of sharing of files was done and a few times we got a bunch of coop games going.

Funnily enough in the actual uni buildings where there was wireless there was two ways to connect, directly and slow or via VPN (which the uni recommended) which was unrestricted and mucho fast, one guy in our first year studio played final fantasy 11 constantly.

Anyway you dont need internet gaming in uni halls all you need is a Playstation & N64/Snes/MegaDrive to play Fifa (or PES when it was better), Tekken and Mariokart/MicroMachines.

In Stafford loads of ports were restricted but you could occasionally manage to play games, file sharing and tunnelling would get you banned from the network.
We used to have loads of fun just playing Lan games though :D

Was blocked at Plymouth. In the end me and my mate paid for a VPN and used OpenVPN to connect to it :D

I don't understand the need for gaming when at uni, just go to the student bar etc etc.

Variety is the spice of life my friend! Internet gaming with a bunch of people from the same hall was a riot because you could bust in and sabotage their game when you died!

Yeah tbh when i go to uni this year im looking to just get away from gaming. Ill just be taking a laptop with me to watch films and that. Spending your time in your dorm will bring you down. My sis hates being in her dorm alone much rathers being out with her mates. Well now shes in 4th year shes in a flat etc so not so bad.

Gaming

i really hope you can play games in uni halls as there is a lot of time that can be burnt when ure bored. As im off in september studying computer science i do not kno yet if i can. So we shall see :D

At my halls you couldn't but I did have a super fast connection...at other halls you could though(same uni). You don't need to play games while at halls :p
