Credit Score

Be careful when requesting a credit score unless you need the EXACT figure yourself.

If it's searched more than a certain amount of times within a certain time period (2-3 times in as many months) your score will go down. This also includes if banks and people try and search on you, IIRC.

Best thing to do is a credit report which gives you a good indication if you have good or bad credit without impacting on your actual history in any way.

This post has reminded me I need to cancel with Experian, my free month is almost up!

Ahh so you tried them. Let me know if its easy to cancel. The reason I say that is some companies deliberately make it hard so that you end up paying fees!

I think I have to call them on an 0800 number to cancel my free thing which I signed up for to check my credit report not score.

I know someone who has done it and its fairly straight forward. Although we signed up to Experian.

Check My File are great. I signed up for the the triple service, but you can get one-off reports from each (or all) of the three main services. Unlike a report from a single credit agency itself, direct, Check My File will give you an overall view of your history, the actual score a company would get/give on a credit application, and things you can do to improve your score over time. They also have credit analysts on call, so you can ring or email to get fully independent, tailored advice about your situation.

I've gone from having an apalling credit history, to having a rather large reserve of well managed credit cards, overdrafts and credit accounts in the space of three years. It's hard work, but educational and definitely worth it.

JMHO. :)

EDIT: To clarify, CheckMyFile give you your actual credit reports AND your scores from the three main agencies. The reports AND scores are updated for you monthly so you have a quick and easy reference as to your progress and your credit account payment histories etc.

Hmmm, that Check My File looks good. Does my credit rating get penalised because I are getting my reports from a third party?

Nope it doesn't affect your credit score in any way. It does record 'audits' on your record, iirc but they do not affect your score in ANY way. Searches (actual applications to credit companies for credit) do, obviously, but not checking your file. In fact, pretty much the opposite. By checking your file regularly and taking control of your credit and finances, you can only really IMPROVE your score in the long run?

Worked for me, anyway. Cheers. :)

Yeah I'm on the quarterly option. Once my old bad credit (default) drops off and everything is 100% in order (by January 2010) I'll quit my subscription. Oh and yes, I'm pretty sure you can cancel any time you like after the first quarter - read up though to be safe.

join experian.co.uk

they do a free trial

That'd be fine, I guess, but CheckMyFile (to whom I'm in NO way affiliated and get no referral/commission or anything btw!) are better. Why pay for the service from one agency when CMF gives you the same (and more) info from all three agencies? JMHO.

His credit score, out of a possible 1000. Nice one Rotty :) Mine's only 850 atm, but once my ancient (literally five years, 11 months and three weeks) old CCJ falls off this month it should go up again. Fingers crossed. :D
