OcUK Book Club #3: Cormac McCarthy - The Road

If you found it a bit annoying for the lack of punctuation, etc. semi-pro, I suggest you stay well away from 'Last Exit To Brooklyn'. :p

I've just remembered what the writing style reminded me somewhat of; DBC Pierre's Vernon God Little, also critically lauded for the eccentric writing style and that book actually irritated me. I think I might be better not knowing what critics think before reading because I find myself so frequently disagreeing with them and I can't tell if it is just my contrary streak or not.

Do you like Hemingway? He has a very stark way of writing as well, to be fair I love McCarthy's writing style but I can see why some people have issues with it.

Oddly enough I don't think I've ever read any Hemingway or if I have it hasn't stuck in my mind at all, probably someone I should get round to reading though.

I've just noticed that the story is in post-production for a film with Viggo Mortensen playing 'The Man'.

Under the conclusion that The Road probably had a similar feel to No Country For Old Men and that I actually loved A History of Violence and Appaloosa, I have a feeling that The Road may be something I'll really enjoy when put to screen; the slow moody and atmospheric tales is something that Viggo manages to do very, very well in my opinion.

The only thing that concerns me slightly about the film adaptation is something I read where one of the executives made mention of "zombies". Now, of course, the book didn't have anything to do with zombies, so this may simply be a description of the cannibals in the book, but I hope this doesn't become a focal point of the movie.

My worry is that we'll end up with a film like I am Legend - CGI monsters running up walls and breaking down doors, rather than the slow paced terror of the book itself.

Right, time to pick our next book. The first person who can answer the following question and include a number between 1-30 will pick the next title. :)

Famously credited to sparking the Indian Rebellion of 1857: What were the standard issue paper-cartidges used by the East India Company believed to have been coated in?

I don't know about the lard... all I saw was that you hadn't added a number. Hey, it's your conscious, not mine though! :)

Hmm. Right, as to keep the peace; the first of you two to answer this question (no edits please) gets to pick a new number. I've shuffled the list around now so it doesn't matter either way.

Which American poet, published under the company Faber and Faber took her own life by placing her head in an oven?
