So I went home to see my parents on Monday and passed a church nearby on the walk from the station, which just looks like a dirty old hut. They have a sign outside where they usually write some religious bs on it, and this time I saw something that got me quite angry. It said something along the lines of "Religion and Science cannot both be true. God is true, god is love, ... <forgot the rest>".

It infuriates me because first of all they are just making stuff up on the sign to prove god/religion is true is true, thus science cannot be true. It astounds me that these people do not even know what science is. Science is not about disproving religion, it is about understanding the universe through experimentation and observations. You cannot disprove an observation. Did the person who write the sign not realise that all that technology around us has been a result of science?

I'm very tempted to go in to talk to them, but if they believe such rubbish then it will be like talking to a brick wall.

There was a cross planted on a roundabout around here this month, about 2 foot high with some religious stuff attached, was there for about a week before it got burnt down.

*Note, I'm not suggesting to burn the church... ;)

To me it sounds like they didn't think the sign through properly.

I'm a Christian, and I have a keen interest in science, I just don't agree with the theory of evolution.
I certainly wouldn't make a blanket statement like that it's Christianity or Science.

I'm a Christian, and the sign sounds stupid. It's things like this that worsen the general public's attitude toward religion in general.

Definitely. There was a talk show on ITV a few nights ago which hosted a religious debate with about 12 people of different religious beliefs, and 1 atheist guy. I couldn't believe just how close minded and ignorant some of them appeared just refusing to even listen to someone finishing a sentence without interrupting to tell them how wrong they were. The atheist guy just sat back and left them all to it as there were a few Christians too busy arguing amongst themselves... Can't remember the name of the show unfortunately but it should be on the itv catchup thing.

It probably qualifies as ironic if the sign was designed and printed on a computer that is a product of science.

Hell, even if it was painted there was chemistry involved in making the paint.

Even the kookiest of fundamentalists might as well accept that science generally works, even if they might choose not to make use of it's benefits.

Was it along the lines of the pentecostal (gg spelling) or exclusive brethren type places rather than a regular church?

Some of those smaller groups have extremely distorted and closed minded views.

By the looks of the place, it wouldn't surprise me if they were one of those smaller groups who are closed minded. They always put up signs that seems to display their fanaticism.
