Hi guys,
My rig is as follows:
---------------
E8400 3Ghz
Geforce 8800GTX
4gb DDR2 Ram
24" Benq monitor 1900x1200 res
---------------

The CPU was recently upgraded from an E6600 2.4ghz to a E8400 as I managed to get it for free :D, but I am still finding that performance isnt what Id like when gaming at 1900x1200, which is obviously due to the graphics card.

I am looking into upgrading the graphics card, as I think if I get a new cooler for the new cpu, I can overclock it which should keep me going for a while.

The question is, which graphics card should I go for?

I was looking at either a 4870x2 or a GTX295, or maybe something else?

I dont want to overspend and be limited by my cpu, but dont want to underspend and find the performance isnt what Id like.

What would you recommend?

Thanks

Whats games do you play at that res? But yeah i agree 260 is more then capable if your worried about underspending in regards to tech maybe get a GTX280/275 thats should just enough for the next wave of games too at the res...lol i hope:p

My current spec is literally identical to that, same CPU (mine is overclocked though), same GPU, even the same monitor :p I've personally just upgraded to the 4870x2 which I should be receiving tomorrow. I went for it due to the price being very low for the power and the fact it'll keep me going on most new games for a fair while yet.

BTW, just looking at CPU coolers now, any that you would recommend?

Depends on your budget really. The titan fenrir is getting great reviews and seems a good overall cooler for the price

or higher up the scale, you could get a Thermalright Ultra and slap on a couple of fans for a push-pull effect, but will set you back around £60. The later being the better, but obviously comes at a price.

I'm running all my games at that res with a [email protected] 4Gb of ram and a BFG 8800GTX OC and don't really have any problems. Left 4 Dead is maxed with 8*AA and 60FPS constant, grid is maxed with 2*AA and makes about 50FPS, and Fallout 3 I have maxed with 2*AA and make a constant 60 indoors and never dip below 20 outdoors.

If I were you I would personally wait a little longer and squeeze some more life out of that 8800GTX.

A little off topic, but may be relevant to some in a similar situation;

I've just sold my 4870 and am currently using a 8600GT for the time being! :(

Will a 4870X2 be bottle necked by my Q6600 @ 3.25ghz, and if so, drastically?

Ive just orderd a titan fenrir cooler and some AS5 for Monday :)

BinnsY, I can run games like left for dead without issue, but its not exactly graphically intensive.

I have noticed that games like COD4/5 do tend to chug slightly with everything maxxed out at 1900x1200, so I think a GPU upgrade is in order.

By the looks of this Id be best off going with a 4870x2, and clocking my cpu upto 4gig, should help considerably :D

At 3.25ghz, it would be bottlenecking slightly, but not by much. If you can get it to 3.6ghz, which is really it's sweet point (run Ram at 1:1, highest overclock at a safe voltage). It would stop bottlenecking, but I'd do it just for the speed increase. Your Ram's better than mine so you'd have an easier job of it *looks angrily at the 2 cheapo sticks of Kingston *** in his computer*

gtx 260/216, and clock the nobs of it. Anythink else just cost more for little gain imho. Ati 4870 1 gig (clock this too) also is worth a look at pricewise.

I agree with the sentiments above:

Go for a 4870 / 4890 or a GTX260, and keep the rest of the system. Push your CPU as far as it will go though.

Have been trying my hardest to get past 3.3, i was at 3.3 stable one evening, logged on the next day and ran prim 95 etc and it crashed, wasn't happy :(

So clocked back down to 3.25 and it is stable again.

I'll post my voltages tonight, if you could let me know with any support where im going wrong it'd be much appreciated!!

We've different motherboards, but would you mind posting your voltages for everything so i can get a rough idea on what to look for?
