I am transfering my 4850 into another PC, so need to find a card to replace it. My question is what card will run ok with my current setup was thinking of getting a 4890 as they seem good value at £160.

E6600 @2.4
4gb ram
Gaming @1680x1050

I have also seen the 4870 512mb for £97 but was thinking that i should probably get a card with 1gb ram.

Thanks

Thanks, i'll check those out. Had thought about overclocking the processor a little, though using a stock cooler - may experiment a little ;)

3Gig should be easy on that processor without having to bump voltage and still ok on stock cooling - this will give you enough CPU for anything upto a 260GTX fine (and possibly faster) in most games.

Beyond 3Gig I'd want to move off stock cooling and either put an Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7 (if you don't want to take the motherboard out to fit it) or a Coolermaster V8 on there.

If your resolution is 1680x1050 then I dont think you would be okay with that processor, its a descent c2d. As others have said, if possible a slight oc will reduce chance of bottleneck

Got an e6600 and a new xfx 4890. So far its been great compared to the 8800 gts 640 it replaced. Cpu is at 3.0 and will go higher with new x48 board, hopefully. Trying to work out the bios settings, different to the old p35 i had.

games and this is what i got.

HAWX @ 1900 by 1200 all on max aax4 afx16 max 166 avg 49. It does run very smooth with vsync stays at 60fps according to fraps.

Bf2 1600 by 1200. aax8 afx16 max settings. Max 200fps min 80fps. Depending on players and map. But it is very smooth if fps cap is removed.

DOW2 1900 by 1200. afx16 all settings maxed out. min 17fps avg

Crysis ap demo. 1900 by 1200. settings on very hign no aa, afx16. about 20-24fps average droping to 15fps. But i find crysis to be playable with the fps so low.

2nite i'll be trying Company of Heroes and Cod4.

Will try to oc the card a bit but anything higher than 50% on the fan = the first dyson prototype IMO.

e6600 is still a decent enough cpu , had mine since they came out and still going strong at 3.3ghz , im running a 4850 and plan to upgrade to 4890 or maybe a x2 solution soon and i have no reason to think the cpu will bottleneck it :)

Ok, so if i understand correctly. If i continue at stock speed, a 4850/4870/4890 would all give similar results - to gain the benefits of say a 4890 I would need to overclock my E6600 to around 3.0mhz at least?

i have to dissagree.

The 8800 gtx beats the 4850.

HD 4870 beats the 280 GTX now

HD 4890 beats the 275 GTX

To a certain extent yes.

I've found this in the past and had to overclock accordingly.

Only exceptions come from the fact that all games are different. A more GPU intensive game won't be effected much by raw CPU speed.

gt

Got mine to 3.2 400x8. HAve noticed an improvement. On DOW2 its upped the min to 24fps from 17

The settup from my gts was incredible and it cost me 100 quids less than the gts nearly 2 years ago.
We really need NV to bring out a stonker next round. Until the 4870/90 came out the gf market was
so boring and bad in general to the consumer

Thanks for that. I will do some mild overclocking tonight and see how that goes. :)

Aside from farcry 2 - the 4850 is faster than the GTX.

The 4870 matches blows with the 260GTX for the most part, rarely is it beating a 280GTX.

4890 and 275 I don't think the dust has settled enough to know which is really the winner - depends which camp comes out with the best drivers for it next.
