Question about PSP-GO and currently owned UMD's

Hi,

I've seen some of the info released about the PSP-GO. One of the things I heard mention was that it would not have a UMD slot on it, and that all games etc would be downloaded.

I was just wondering if they had mentioned anything about current PSP owners who own a number of games on UMD. Will there be anyway of playing these on the PSP-Go or will it be a case of having to buy the games again if you want to play them on the PSP-Go?

I'm extremely tempted to buy one of these when it comes out, and give my PSP to my younger brother, but if the games are not playable, well it seems a little bit of a con.

Cheers.

They plan on letting you download the games you have on UMD's but their is nothing in place at the moment as it's in planning stages.

There is a rumour about putting something in shops where you can take your PSP UMD's and load them onto your PSP-Go.

But it hasn't been confirmed by Sony. So they might be working on something else.

"One of the biggest hurdles to getting Playstation Portable owners to upgrade to the recently announced PSP Go is their existing library of UMD games which won't work on the device.

But don't worry, Sony Computer Entertainment is hard at work on a solution.

"We are looking into programs for owners who have previously purchased UMD titles and want to exchange them for digital versions," said Sony Computer Entertainment's Brian Keltner. "It's something we are still hammering out the details. As soon as we have solid plans in place we will make an announcement."

Keltner added that SCEA hopes to have the plan in place before the PSP Go ships.

Sony's John Koller, Director of Hardware Marketing, told Gizmodo that the program was a "short term good will program that would continue for years afterward."

Earlier this year rumors surfaced that one of the programs Sony was looking at would put kiosks in retail stores that would allow gamers to turn their UMD games into digital ones.

Keltner declined to comment on the rumor."

Ah that's good to hear. To be honest my collection isn't that big, but with the announcement of new games and new PSP has renewed my interest in it (but didnt want to buy a few more games then be stuck when the GO is out.

Simplest way would be you post in your physical UMD and you get given a code for the PSN version. Hard to abuse imo. Easy to co-ordinate as well imo. They will never have something this simple. Ultimately people with old PSP's and UMD will get screwed over, of this I have no doubt.

You can't. Tis why the PSP is an absolute flop. The games are too easily pirated and I don't know how they think they can avoid it this time around.

I would say the DS has suffered from piracy more than the PSP mainly because no modification is needed to the console itself.
