Cheapest car that's fun to drive

Well engine noise is going to be an issue on most cars as bar one or two exceptions I don't think many 4's sound nice. Twin spark Alfa or maybe a V-Tec thingy but you're not in budget territory with latter and not in any other territory with an Alfa really.

MX5 is where I'd go to be honest.

If you can get an old RWD Ford, Vauxhall, Austin, J car etc you can have some serious drift fun with them. Neutral handling, underpowered but respond well to a bit of tuning.

Good point, how could I forget a MK2 Escort, though the good ones are silly money into several grand. Great bark and great fun.

Even the crap ones go for good money. Something like a 1300l can still fetch 2k. Old Fords are getting stupidly expensive now.

In a straight line only...

Not how I remember tbh....

A few years ago I had a work mate who had a Y reg Mk1 - white, it looked the dogs...., he ultimately stacked it and replaced it with a Mk2 which was much better through the twistys as well as the straight bits than the Mk1.

I used to get lifts to work from him daily in both the Mk1 & later the Mk2.

I hate to be predictable, but I've owned quite a lot of the cars mentioned:

mk1 golf gti, mk2 golf gti, 205 1.9 gti, MR2 and .........

I'd say go for a 205 gti or a mk1 MX-5. The 205 will be faster but the MX5 can go sideways in the wet and get the roof down in the dry. Plus you can pick them up for buttons these days.

is it the same lump as in the integra?

Nope 2.2 in the Prelude (H22 / H22A)

and 1.8 in the DC2 type R (B18C5)

The Vtec in the DC2 kicks a lot harder than the Prelude, but the preludes better to drive off vtec thanks to it's bigger capacity.

Although interestingly, the Preludes 280mm brakes are considered an upgrade to the DC2's standard 260ish. Maybe not so interesting.
