I'm guessing (from the trailer) that the plot is that they have clones every three years with imprinted memories.. and that they don't get to go back to earth..

2001 was mundane rubbish which won hearts on it's awesome visuals and cinematography. However, these days we've seen everything so they better do something pretty spectacular with regards to the character and his emotions or it'll be useless.
