I've got a hardware problem
AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE processor and a M3A32-MVP motherboard brought from Members Market
green light comes on, fans spin - processor remains stone cold though :(

hopefully I've been doing this long enough by now not to have made an error ;)

unfortunately I don't have any modern AMD kit to swap out to determine which part is faulty. Is there anyone in the area that has some known working spare bits who can test my kit ? (Obviously I don't wish to risk your main rig !)
I think it most likely the motherboard is duff, so if I can confirm my processor is OK then I'll be a happy bunny.

I'm in between Stone/Stafford/Rugeley but can travel and offer a few quid for your time :)

Have you tried booting out of your case? in case theres a short bewteen mobo and case?
Als have you tried removing all the components and booting just the mobo to see if you get any error beeps? then diagnose the error beeps (if any)
If that works have you tried putting components back in one by one to rule them out? cpu first, then one stick of RAM etc
You can do a certain amount of self diagnosis

I'd check your psu connections, I had a recent similar issue with an aged P4 system.

Swapped about a few cables (in what sequence, I have no idea! :o) and all is now well. :)

I always build stuff on a mat, so no shorts
no error beeps, I think with a cold CPU there will be nothing running the BIOS to make a beep
running one stick of ram

only have 24pin motherboard power, the ATX12v1, the PSU fan header and the CPU fan header connected.
PSU is known working and has normal levels at connector
Parts of the board appear to have power, except the mosfets around the cpu don't appear to be supplied. With no data there is nothing to get hot I think - I'd hazard a guess at the CPU regulation being kaput

Daft question but it has to be asked .... Is the cpu power plugged in ? :)
no question is daft if that's the answer ;)
but yes, the 8 pin ATX12v1 connectors are in, as well as the main 24 pin header.
I get fan spin and green led, so I know basic power is there.

I've also had a video card in and fan spin on that too, obviously no video output though, but it was still working when put back in my main rig.

Do you know the BIOS version? I've just checked and BIOS 1502 onwards supports that CPU. 1502 was released 10th February 2009.

the 8 pin BIOS chip just has "3" inked on it

I had the same problem when I installed that CPU on a different board. Just stuck an older one in, updated the BIOS then the new one worked fine.
really ?
that might be a possibility then :) I was under the impression that all CPU's ran in a low speed form until the BIOS updated the clock chip to run them at the given BIOS speed settings.

So it didn't post or get warm at all ?

If so then I need someone selling a semperon or something :)

sounds to me you need to update the bios to 1502 or higher
if you can contact the member you bought the mobo from and ask if they remember what bios version was on the mobo before they sold it to you.
i have the same mobo running a 940 be however i was lucky and the previous user of the mobo had flashed the bios to 1502 as they were also running the 940 be

No POST, no beeps, not a sausage mate. I may have an old CPU lying around you can have. Let me just check what's supported and what I've got.

Edit: Sorry, just remembered I sold my old CPU's!

I know this is going to sound stupid and your all going to laugh and it's off topic, but where is this members market?

I cannot find it for the life of me :(

Shot in the dark, but the CPU feed on my systems (and old crappy PSU mind) are 4 pin....

Awaits Flak..... :o

Access to the Members Market forum requires two things. Firstly, you will need to have over 250 posts and have been signed up for at least 90 days.

depends on the board, early boards had one 4 pin connector, later ones added a second one for more power (so you see an 8 pin connector)
My PSU provides 4+4 so I've tried it both ways, although I'd assume that more power is better than not enough and left all 8 pins connected

aye it does sound like a bios compatablilty problem. you will probably get beeps from the board if you dont have any memory in. but with it in you will probably just get fans spinning up

mm just saw it as i was in stafford for few years, studying computing in uni mostly. there are many students in uni do computer repairing as a parttime job. but im not in stafford now. let me know if you failed to find anyone, may b i can find a friend who do it

there was a computer place in stafford towncentre, just opposite the chicago nightclub. near natwest bank. i brought a computer from them when i first landed there but was bit expensive.
