Hi,

What's the best motherboard I can use for a Q6600 G0, 4gig 800mhz DDR2 and 2 x 8800gtx cards? I need a board which is going to help me to Oc to 3.2ghz min.. Just like my Asus p5n-e did, before I fiddled with a few of the cpu socket pins and snapped them, by accident of course. :(

I've a budget of around £150. I need the Sli pci-e slots to be as far away as each other as possible.

Also what's the best alternative cooling solution for the 8800gtx's? They generate some heat so I need to cool em down more.

Thanks for your advice

for your 'era' of tech id go for a second hand p5n32-e, imo and experience the most solid board for the q6600, i managed to get 3.8 out of my q6600 on this board, probly due to to it having a 650 and 570 chipset, but on my evga and bfg 680i i struggled to get 3.4ghz stable, im now with an e6600 for stability with my bfg680i

As for cooling of the 8800 then it may as well be water, i've found the after market coolers to be not much better than the stock :( that might be due to my case though (v2000, not best for airflow)

Hi

How about the Asus Striker II Formula ? I've heard good reviews about it.

I could stretch that high, but does the Price justify its performance?

Its basically just a P5N-T Deluxe so if you were going to get one id save myself £50 and get the P5NT

There are no decent nForce boards really for a Q6600 - and few decent nForce boards at all.

Peronally I'd say flog the 8800GTXs, grab a gigabyte X48 board and either get a 260GTX, 275GTX or a 4890 - 4890 would give you the possibility of crossfire later down the line.

If keeping an nVidia card then get a P45 surely, or alternatively flog the cards an get two 4970's and an X48

Unless your going for extreme overclocking - I prefer the X48 as it runs at 2x x16 if you populate both PCI-e slots for whatever reason. The P45 drops even the primary slot to x8 if your using the other PCI-e lanes.

Rroff Is there any performance gain in using x16 lanes apposed to x8? Ive heard that in real world performance, it is similar.

Depends if its running in PCI-e 2.0 mode or not, and on the GPU your using.

Generally its not a huge difference unless your running something very high end. But it would bother me personally all the same not to be running a full x16 heh.

Which is why I went for the 750i F.T.W as it has the extra NF200 chip to give a full PCI-e 2.0 x16 to each lane even in SLI mode.

Previously I had 2x 8800GT on a 650i board that ran x8 x8 and that was fine but when I upgraded to 260GTX SLI there was some performance loss.

Probably not the best all time board for a q6600 But definitely stable upto 3.5 - 3.6 And to be honest its probably the best sensibly priced 780i board around now as there does seem to be fewer and fewer 780i's around lately.
with regards to cooling , What case do you use ? what fan speeds do you run the 8800's at ?
If you use the 2 8800's in the top and bottom slots in this board that would give good air space around them and as long as you have good air flow through your case all should be fine

I've just ordered this board on ebay, cost me in total £106, its used but that's including delivery etc.. Thanks for the heads up. I'm using a Coolermaster Cosmos 1000 case (the huge one) with fairly good cooling. However I would like to know what the best upgrade to the 8800gtx sli cards would be, that only uses a single slot? I've £170 cash on top of what I get for both the 8800gtx's..

Thanks.

OK so do you mean you want to buy new cards or just new coolers for them ? either way I think you may struggle to find something single slot

Is this just curiosity, because im confused as to why you ould buy a nForce based mobo if you were considering going to a single card

@ widdyst the only slots his cards can go in is the end two hence there blue and the middle one is black

Completely agree and why i went to AMD.

If i were the OP i'd sell the DDR2 and get both DDR3 and a 790i mobo.

Best SLi capable s775 board.

Clocked well and seemed pretty stable.

How much did your transfer over to AMD cost you?

I doubt id get much selling my E6600 and BFG680i

I understand that his cards can only go into the blue slots !
I was questioning his single slot idea ? 8800gtx are dual slot
The ops last post is a tad confusing ???

Yea, i thought same, why does he want an sli board if he going to be getting a single slot card?

thats madness lol
