I currently have an Avensis as a company car that I am fairly happy with, however the business milage I am doing is getting higher and higher. It is now looking to be more cost effective running my own car.

I do 50k/year and need to run the car (everything except fuel) and cover any depreciation for around £7k/year (assuming Diesel 50 mpg).

Comfort is a major factor as is reliability, however something with some poke and a better image than the Avensis would be good as I am 23.

Any thoughts would be appreciated...

50k a year, wow, that is mega mileage. I'd suggest looking at the latest line of Merc C Class Diesels, won't be the fastest but should prove very comfortable in the right trim.

dont think a bloke who does 50k and has an avensis can afford a 7 (no offence) - I'd look at a c class too personally. budget depending

i'd suggest a big merc or bmw for the luxury and comfort

I'd second that, although I did a trip from Southampton to John O' Groats and back in 7 days sightseeing in a Mondeo Mk3 TDCi and found that the comfort was fine. Travelled about 350miles a day (motorways and A-roads mainly) and it returned 55mpg. I did have a 525d BMW as a hire car a while back and found the motorway economy wasn't as good as you'd expect ~35mpg. Comfort was great though.

As long as running costs aren't bonkers - comfort and reliability would be the only things I'd look for. At 50k/year most other things can go out the window!

Good luck!

i watched that top gear eco-race the other day, so a jag xj6 diesel could be alright, or a polo bluemotion ;)

it really depends on the budget.
from what i understand, you'll have £7k/year to spend on all costs bar fuel?

I wouldnt, at this level of usage a £7k 530d/A6 TDI would be a liaibility. He cant afford to have his car off the road fixing bits so he needs to swallow some pride and buy something generic and newer.

I'm not sure I fully undestand his sentance actually. Is that accounting for £7k depreciation a year or £7k a year to run the car?

I think the total cost of the car per year cant exceed £7k. I'd read it wrong.

He has £580 a month to buy, insure, repair, service, put tyres on, etc etc a car.

Honda Accord perhaps.

I personally would want a non-sport Merc at 50k a year, it's like driving a big marshmallow.

why not stick with a Toyota, sure not best in class, but pretty much bulletproof, and although not the fastest cars in the world, they aren't a bad place to be either. Wouldn't be my first choice but when you're doing 50k a year i'd imagine reliability would be top priority, though saying that, i see the newer Lexii are coming down in price these days, seen a few new shape ones for around £7k used

Not sure what to suggest, ideally a car with unlimited milage warranty, but they are expensive?
Maybe a Lexus IS?

I run my 57 plate 530d for £322 a month (inc insurance) and don't pay for fuel. Just tax, tyres and an MOT when it's due (before I chop it in for the new 5er).

I did have a failry chunky deposit to put down on it though (£6k)
