My car blew up

I had a twitchy bum moment this week with a mechanical problem.

Had the car remaped and the mechanic came over and asked if I wanted to take it for a spin to make sure I was happy. Cue a roundabout coming onto a NSL road. Boot it in second, hit 4000 RPM to be greeted with a flashing engine management light and a very rough car with naff all power. Luckily it was just a coil pack but it was a definate  moment :p

I'd probably have noticed the second the guage started to move as I'm pretty attentive to things like that, but yea, it could have been lots worse. Stupid plastic impellors.

If the fan was sitting at an odd angle sounds like the pump bearings had failed rather than the impeller. Unusual to have them fail suddenly with no warning at all though, they generally get quite noisy.

I had a very nasty front wheel vibration when pulling off from my old house today. I forgot about the little jerk across the road who likes to deflate tyres and hasn't grown out of it despite me nearly lamping him twice.

Reminds me why I moved away. Still, could have been worse, so well done Fox.

Thread title does not deliver. ;)

Sounds like a real 'brown trousers' few minutes. I hate it when something happens to my car that I'm unsure of the cause. Saying that, now I know straight away what the issue is and I am able to reassure myself due to having most things go wrong at least once in the past. :p

Glad it worked out to be a cheap fix. :)

130 quid all in?!

can't complain at all for that price. i assume changing the waterpump must be quite an easy task on such a lump then? chain driven i presume?

Unlucky, least won't be too expensive to fix.

Should have bought a Vauxhall though - mines ain't hit a snag yet :p

Not too pricey at all.

How many miles has yer Vaux' done just out of interest? iirc fox's motor is about 150k.

Aww Fox, misleading title, I at least expected flames damn it! :p

Arhh I'd have been seriously worried too if that had happened to me. I had an issues with my Mondeo a few weeks ago, thought I had some potentially seriousish engine trouble, turned out to be a lose hose, fixed it and voila, back to normal.

lol @ muffin...

Nice one on the cheap repair, but don't you think the fact that it's a quick, easy and cheap job to do when it does go bang, justifies the reasoning behind advising to leave it?

It's not like your clutch/gearbox example, which was a no-brainer, and as said, it's not like the pump failing will take the engine with it as it's chain driven. Give the cost/speed of repair, the only reason I can think to replace it as a matter of course is that it might cost you a days pay (spot the contractor :p)?
