The Samsung OmniaHD i8910 ... this NEEDS it's own thread.

Ive just read on avforums that the SOHD is out of stock everywhere because orange has recalled the phone because of some fault with the phone. new stock is arriving this friday of the new batch which are fine now. Any truth to this and what about those who have the first batch?

No fault on the phone and it has not been recalled. Orange tech helpdesk.;)

Im going to be ordering one of these when they come back in stock at orange.
Before i do i keep on reading people saying that the firmware is crippled by orange?.

What does this exactly mean?, certain applications missing?.

Yes but the new generic firmware will be available soon. ;)

Been on O2 for about 5yrs and found them great.... I REALLY wanted this fone (for better or worse... :( ) so decided to opt over to Orange and give them another try-out...(though, TBF, never found fault with them last time before jumping ship over to O2 - twas a similar scenario but in reverse - O2 had the deal I was after that Orange didn't....)

However, I had to go into the O2 shop in town prior to getting the i8910 HD to pick up the missus' repaired Nokia 5610, so out of interest, asked the assistant if O2 had any plans to get the i8910 HD in as well....

He said that as it was a direct competitor to the iphone (and as O2 had exclusivity to that handset)...had heard that O2 were prolly not even going to consider stocking it at all as it would be a rival!!

Seems a bit daft to me tbh...

I would've stayed with O2 if they were gonna get it....as it is, I've now moved over to Orange - and they've lost a customer!!

Makes perfect sense, really, they have exclusivity to that phone which has been one of the most popular yearly for the past few years, they aren't going to throw that away. For every customer they lose for not stocking the i8910 they are still gaining many aiming to buy an iPhone, especially now with the new fw on the horizon

27 new widgets available on Orange i8910 branded phones.

The more the better, before I go searching in vain, where can I download those? Are they from orange directly? I have no idea about how to go about getting orange stuff :(.

Click on the widgets side bar and use the widget downloadloader to get the ones you need.

Loving the fone....what a stellar-leap from my old SE K810i it's turning out to be

One disappointment with it though - I cant see that it can do txt message interval repeats.....you know, when you miss the txt come through, it goes off again 2/5/10mins later untill you acknowledge the txt message....bummer! I thought ALL Samsungs did that :(

Tried installing the Route66 from the Samsung website and it keeps asking me to buy liceince etc - is there another way to download the Maps - I thought it came free with the Sammsung?

The maps, software, voices etc. are free. You have to pay for the ability to "walk" or "drive" to a destination.

You download the SamsungLBS program for your phone (http://uk.samsungmobile.com/supports/softwaremanuals/software.do) - make sure you choose the i8910 from the list.

You can also download the Route 66 Sync software (http://www.66.com/route66/index.php?cid=UK&act=1&catid=255) which installs on your computer so that you can download the map data if you don't want to do it on your phone.

Which is the BEST routing software for the i8910 in your opinions?

I have Orange maps with Walk/Drive etc (but NOT the traffic/speedcams £2.45pm extra at the mo...)

I've yet to use it to actually get anywhere - just had a quick fiddle and it seems to be quite good....

Just wondering if there are any better free/cheap alternatives!

Thx

I used the free orange maps yesterday, worked fine!, Just to let people know if your having issues with battery draining very fast. Change it to 2g mode, on Connectivity settings, i had the same issue, basically it was trying to find a 3g signal at home, where its weak, so it kept killing the battery, set it on 2g while im at home, still on 5 bars after 24 hrs. I will change it back to 3g when at work.!!

I've got Orange Maps, Google Maps, Samsung's LBS and Garmin XT Mobile on my i8910. I'm backpacking round Portugal and Spain for two weeks and we'll see which one is able to guide me round the tourist sites the best!! Samsung's LBS does look pretty good as it does have quite a good search facility for tourist destinations, cash points etc.

I think Orange and Google Maps require a live link to the network to download information and with roaming charges at £2.98 per MB, I think I'll be using LBS and Garmin on my trip.

garmin xt is pretty good ... i use it in combination with sygic mc guider .. for usage with a car garmin xt is best, sygic is better when just walking around

Does ths 2g affect the functionality of the maps at all....do they need a fast connection?

Not sure, i set it on 3g when i was using the orange maps. i only usally leave it on 2g at home, because i have wifi, i need 3g at work, but at work i get 5 bars on 3g so its ok.
