Windows 7 hits RC stage Build 7100

Hey

Just my experiences with Windows 7 on my netbook. I'm now happily running a vLited install (removed lots of drivers, languages and speech recognition). With all my programs and a 512MB page file there is still 1GB free on a 8GB SSD :D

Feels very quick (about the same as the previous nLite XP install). I didn't install any drivers (except for the card reader!) as the default Win 7 drivers work perfectly.

Overall happy :)

Cheers,

Suman

I'm having issues with my install. I have tried dvd install and that didn't work for 64 bit windows 7..usually just restarts the computer when stuck on 0% expanding for a while.

I have now put it onto usb and checked the md5 hash with the first post here and it matches.

This time the install went through, expanding everything and went to completing install and then restarted, ok great i'm thinking.

The computer restarts, goes back into installation and does a few bits and bobs (updating registry etc) and then it goes back to completing installation and instantly reboots and when it comes back it won't load into windows as it says the registry is corrupt and windows repair won't fix it.

Any ideas?

Have tried installing to SSD and normal HDD

Should i try disabling some things in the bios? Sound card etc?

Well vista 64 bit was also having issues, whereas the 32 bit versions seems to suffer no ill effects.

I turned down my memory and disabled the azalia codec and then vista 64 bit install went through without a hitch...guessing the windows 7 one will probably also work now but might just leave that a bit as have been battling with this damn thing ever since my old HDD decided to fail.

Anyone having trouble playing back KVM files within WMP on 64bit 7100 build? I have CCCP but this didn't resolve the fault.

Also... is anyone having problems using the Kaspersky beta? Everytime I run a Full Scan the computer will just hang after about 10 minutes of scanning. But I didnt get this problem on my other machine using the 64 bit 7100 build + kaspersky.

How do you download it?

I go here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx

but it re-directs you to fill in a form, which when filled in, takes you to a screen which seems to have been hanging for about 2 hours now with no indication of progress - this can't be right surely

It sould be easier to get this...grr

To download it you need a Windows Live ID, basically this is just a windows live (hotmail) email account which is free. If already have such an account just login then visit that link and the download link at the bottom of the page will take you direct to a product key and download, it will also email the product key to the email account if you forget to take a note of it.

There's very little reason for an existing Vista user to upgrade to Windows PR (sorry I mean 7) I can't help calling it PR (Public Relations) as that all it really is. The press tried to destroy Vista simply because third party manufacturers hadn't got their act together. The hardware requirements for W7 are just about the same as they were for Vista, so if your XP PC couldn't run Vista then chances are it won't be any different with W7. I find it amazing that one can change the name of a product add a few tweaks here and there and suddenly everyone says "isn't this great" Talk about sheep - baaaaaaaaaa!

Just to satisfy myself about there being little value in someone who already has Vista upgrading to Windows 7, I have installed the Release Candidate on my Laptop this morning (installed as an upgrade). I have previously installed the Beta version on my old P4 Desktop but reverted back to Vista after a few weeks as I couldn’t see anything that was new that particularly fired me.

My Laptop's specs barely match those of a modern netbook yet it has run Vista HP without any problems. Install went OK and for all intents and purposes I am still looking at my Vista Desktop, even got the same startup jingle.

What I have noticed straightaway is the RAM usage is actually up from 58% to 62% while CPU is down but only marginally. All other installed software appears to load and perform no differently to Vista. Still not keen on libraries and overall I still prefer the look and feel of the Vista GUI.

If I was in the market for a new PC or Laptop at the end of this year then I would certainly get it with W7 but if I needed a new PC right now then I wouldn't hesitate in recommending buying into Vista. I still maintain that there's little to choose between either OS and that W7 is an attempt to re-brand Vista. Having already got Vista I for one can't see myself spending more of my hard earned cash on what is essentially a very very similar product.

Plenty of differences between Vista and W7, I think you're just being ignorant.

How polite of you to point that out to me willhub - have you thought about a career in the diplomatic service?

I have used Vista since day one and have now tried both the Beta and RC releases of W7. I didn't say there weren't any differences, what I said was I cannot see any good reason for someone with Vista to upgrade (that is the average user I'm talking about). Perhaps you could enlighten us with your experiences with both Vista and W7 quantifying why we should upgrade and thanks once again for your helpful response.

Thanks, I'm always here to help glad you found my post helpful

Well I agree with most of what he says. W7 is a huge PR exercise. I reckon most people who didn't like Vista - because it was so different from XP - won't like Windows 7 either. When I use the W7 RC it seems just like Vista to me. However I like Vista, so that is no bad thing.

After it has settled down from loading my W7 is running 63 Processes (63 Services) incl. this webpage, msn, ultramon, logitech setpoint, Avast, weather and PC usage widgets. Is this normal? seems high to me as its currently using 34% RAM idle:confused:
