Will You Buy Windows 7???

I'm probably going to buy Windows 7 retail 64bit as and migrate my system from linux
(Linux photo editing workflow isn't quite as easy as what could be done with windows / lightroom + Photoshop).

*tries to resist urge to point out in how many ways Win7 is better than XP* :p

Dont resist, feel free to list the main advantages.

I am running Vista 64 on a Q6600 based system with 4gb ram and a 8800 gts gfx card.
Mostly used for gaming and web browsing.

Would Win 7 be a valuable upgrade for me?

EDIT: i noticed you say win 7 compared to XP, sorry. I prob wont bother upgrading myself.

I will be buying it. Its way better than vista but thats not saying much really because so is XP in most ways and Linux in almost every way.

Have you read that somewhere or do you actually believe it? I have run Vista from day one and found it to be the best OS MS have ever produced, no issues at all. I have also installed W7 Beta and W7 RC. Just restored my Vista image tonight after trying out RC - as far as I'm concerned it's just Vista in a different frock - even uses the Vista kernel. If you already have Vista then there's little there to justify spending on an upgrade.

I'll probably get a copy for me media pc as the "red button" functionality has been added to tv in media centre, also muting a channel will add subtitles which I thought was pretty funky. While there's some nice touches I think it will be a while after release before I get it for my gaming pc.

Yarp, most likely Business version tho :/

Might buy it if its £59 like OS X always have been.

Well, from the WWDC announcements yesterday, OSX upgrade to the new release will be $29 which will probably be £29.

Lifehacker had an interesting article containing information from Best Buy in the US (see here) where it gave upgrade pricing for Windows 7. If this is correct then retail upgrade for Home Premium would be $49 which, of course, would equate to at least £49 over here. That would definitely make upgrading more probable to me.

What would be nice is if Microsoft did the same as Apple and did a "Family Pack" so you could upgrade up to five systems in the same household for far less than the individual upgrade costs. For Snow Leopard this is going to be $49. If Microsoft did say the same for £99 say then I know that I'd be upgrading all the boxes running Windows in the house to Windows 7 as it wouldn't make sense not to. It would mean that people would have more encouragement to go to the new release instead of staying on the old one which would be easier from a support point of view.

If the prices are reasonable definitely!
Just bought an new laptop with Vista home premium so I will see how an upgrade goes.

i will probably buy it if its reasonable cost, been using it on a laptop and cant fault it at all so far. never bothered with vista at all but really like 7. When i build my next rig i'll definately want 7 on it.

Not buying it, but through our licensing and technet at work I will continue using it.

I'm still unsure as to whether I prefer it over Vista. Aero Peek is attractive, but a pain in the arse after a while. Even disabling it jumbles everything up.

And what were they thinking with the lack of quick lauch? Yes I enabled it, but to have it disabled by default is daft.

For a 32 bit OS (Ie my laptop) I don't really feel the need to upgrade from XP, even for Windows 7 (The RC runs nicely on this laptop). However for my 64 bit capable PC with 8GB Memory then the 64 bit version of Windows 7 will definately be worth it, especially since it is still on XP as it's main OS, with the 64 bit RC of Windows 7 on Dual Boot. I will probably get a retail license as well. I have had Vista on my PC in the past (uni license, which still works, have it at home) but after a reformat I wasn't impressed enough to buy it. 7 However, is looking strong.
