i7 2.66 or AMD 3.2??

not sure if this has been asked in this why but here goes :P

looking to upgrade my pc and been a fan of amd for ages but always thought my pc strugles with certain things. I plan to game and also use office programs like exel, word and publisher as well as dreamweaver, so my question is to the i7 and amd users what would suit me better

amd 3.2GHz or an I7 2.66 or 2.97 (or whatsever)

From what you said, AMD. No point getting the i7 unless you do video encoding or CAD work.
 
The slowest i7 rapes the fastest amd in almost everything.
The fastest amd even struggles against the fastest C2Q
If the amd 3.2 was half the price it was now, then maybe... but it's not and for a little bit more you can get a much better i7

Interesting. The i7 920 is beaten by the Core 2 Quads in most of the games, so's the fastest AMD for that matter, though it does beat the i7. This is at stock though, doesn't the i7 overclock higher than the AMD? And if you get an i7 920 up to 3.8Ghz then it'll score higher than an i7 965 at 3.2Ghz won't it? Basicly weigh up price vs performance = AMD, but the i7 will be faster, probably at everything once overclocked.
 
Everyone always talks about bang for buck. Well Ocing a 920 to 3.2 (a very modest OC btw) gets you a $1000 cpu (965) performance at a fraction of the price. I got 3.2ghz on my stock cooler btw.

Amd....is cheaper, that is all.
 
If your main priority is gaming, you may as well get the AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition or the new dual core version.

I can play Crysis at 1920x1200 @ 56fps @ 3.6GHz, more than enough for that game - extra cash on a decent graphics card is more worthwhile instead.
