Intel to discontinue Core i7 920 & 940 CPUs

Intel will have the i7 as there top of the range platform and the i5 is the replacement for the Core2Quad. The 950 chip replaces the 940 and the 975 updates the 965 extreme, next year we'll see 6 core processors for the i7.

I'm happy enough with my i7 bar i have the CO revision so i will reserve my opinions on this until a proper release from Intel.

the bit tech article was misworded and fi you actually read it it doesnt say theya re ditching the 920 and 940, just thinking about it.

Besides from what extensive reading ive been doing recently the 920 seems to be one of the most popular chips they've ever made.

And there is an error straight away as it has been well known about Intel replacing the 940 for some time.

But if that's too rich for your Meltdown-melted wallet, you might instead pick up a Core i7 920, which can be found at various outlets for well under $300. It takes well to overclocking, and an Intel spokesman told The Reg that it will "most definitely" remain available for the foreseeable future.

This story sounds fake to me. Why would Intel stop selling their best chip so far unless it was to be replaced by something better which this story says it isnt. It could be a rumor made by Intel to increase sales for this period as they too are no doubt suffering from the recession.

I'm curious how good the intel's were. Before I OC'd ever, I was always far more impressed with the intels than others. They just seemed snappier. I had old ones for p4's that had bios updates that made the whole pc seem twice as fast. Granted, those were old machines running xp on 256gb ram so twice as fast is still slow enough to tick you off

It could be fake. A lot of what you read on the internet is after all

However, the replacement, as you say, is leaving the 950 (although some doubt cast on the longevity of that although less likely) and the extreme cpus and later the six core. And Intel would claim their 975 is their best chip not the the 920

Both those cpus superior to the 920. Although not if you overclock and want bang for bucks which lets face it, Intel doesn't want you as a customer anyway .

It could be true as it makes sense to steer "mainstream" people to the i5 platform and the type of people who will buy the i7 platform won't mind if their cpu costs £500. In fact, there are a few overclockers on this forum and others who buy the extreme cpus anyway so no change for them.

Both AMD and Intel have done this in the past in an attempt to stop people getting extreme cpu performance from a "budget" cpu.
