EA VP: We have maxed out the 360

Microsoft might be busy extending and building on the Xbox 360's capabilities with Project Natal and all manner of NXE and Live updates, but it sounds like some of their third-party devs think they're running out of headroom -- in an interview with the Official Xbox Magazine, EA senior VP Patrick Soderlund said that "we've maxed out the 360 but we haven't maxed out the PS3." That's an interesting parallel to what Miyamoto was just saying about the Wii, of course, but it doesn't seem like the situation is entirely dire: Soderlund also said that he's "truly impressed" with the 360 and that he "would have a headache" if he were running Sony. Still, that doesn't bode well for Microsoft's planned 10-year 360 lifecycle if it's true -- we'll see if Redmond has something new for us before 2015 after all.

Interesting that that is coming from EA of all people.

Not suprised EA has said that, EA are the lazyest bunch of coders on the planet. And now they'll have to learn the old art of thightening there code...and they don't have the skillz

This.

The code in EA games is supposed to be dreadfully wasteful. They'll just have to shape up and improve their work imo.

This is a brave thing to say, and I'm certainly not going to dispute that EA can't get any more out the 360, it's their programmers after all.

It'll be interesting to see what happens on their next few releases then, I know when looking at cross platform titles, if there is a big 'difference' in quality, I will always go with the better one as a matter of course..

EA making excuses for their crap upcoming titles no doubt.

Oh noes! Not Fight Night 4!!! :(

EA keep reusing the same old inefficient game engines and have done for years. They can't even get PC games right despite having uber hardware so it's no wonder only a handful of their games are actually playable on console.

I expect a major SKU revision from Microsoft at some point rather than a new console on new tech. They really need bigger storage be it by HDD or BluRay (likely HDD considering the new on demand games service) and if they do this it will probably get a lot of negative press for not doing it in the first place.

I really enjoy my 360 and it's certainly offered me a great gaming experience at a decent price. The PS3 is just way out of my costing and GT5(:Prologue) is the only real game that could be my reason to buy one then I'll probably just end up using it as a BluRay player. Sure, PS3 has the better headroom and hardware but big releases are few and far between.

Lest we forget EA made a big hoohar about not developing for the 360 and maybe they're trying to find a way out again. People are learning not to accept rehashed rubbish that's been rushed out so they're probably seeing poor 360 sales and want to find a way to moan about it or justify it.

It is odd how the tables have swung though, the where originally releasing bad ports/games on the PS3 saying it was too hard to program for, now they are practically moaning, the 360 was too easy to program for.

All this 10 year stuff on both systems is BS. Sony got lucky with the life cycle of the PS2. Technology moves faster and faster each year. There's no way they will get as many years out of the ps3 before releasing the ps4.

The 360 has had a decent run but I failed to see anything in the E3 that suggests it's got much life left. Natal is decent enough but it will be played with in this generation. Trying to make it look like it's got more life as a system than it actually has.

It must be really tempting to release another xbox in the next couple of years but they really don't want to get out of sync with the sony release. So many screw ups in the first place not having a hdd with all systems. They should have added a blu ray add on to lengthen the age of the 360.

I dont get the critism of EA rehashing engines. They put out some of the most popular titles on this forum yet still they get slagged off. They have moved sports titles on to a new level compared to their competition.

The 10 year lifecycle doesn't mean they won't be releasing the PS4 for another 6 years, it means they'll continue to support the PS3 after the release of the PS4. Look at the PS2; it's still having new games for it released today, it even had an exclusive earlier in the year! (and a good one to boot)

Agreed, out of all publishers last year EA released the most promising new IPs. To say they're rehashing games all the time when they are responsible for both the development and publishing of Dead Space and Mirrors Edge, two of the most promising new IPs i've seen in a long time, just isn't fair.

On topic: The guy in the op is talking testicles imo.

But there are always glaring bugs and average visuals which carry on through the franchises each year which is really poor form, esp when there are communities full of bad words about it. It's like minimum effort, maximum profit and it's not good enough when the gaming industry is just about the biggest entertainment market these days.

Natal hasn't got a release date has it? I expect it to be at least 12 months away and we could see new console rumours and sneap peaks by then. Maybe Natal will be an integral part of the next gen from MS.

Either way, there's nowt wrong with the systems as they are, there's loads of good games and logevity on the 360 and Forza 3 will the main game I play come october. Storage limits are aparent, but I don't see much more improvment hardware wise. The 360 really could do with better AA at least, but I'm happy with where its at right now.

The last people i'm going to listen to when it comes to optimising game engines and getting the most from a system are crytek...

All of these statements are just PR by developers imo 'zomg, we pushed the console TO THE LIMIT. It has the best graphics because IT HIT THE LIMIT' etc.

The company that throws Intel and Nvidia advertising at you when you load it on a PC then you realise you can't actually play it in anything other than victorian television mode ;)

Couldn't agree more......buggy games, poor coding and general lack of "skilz" as you put it :)
I was looking forward to Army of Two prior to release....the "finished" article was a bit of a mess...

I'm sure the creators of the old 80s computer games would laugh if they saw how inefficient game code generally is these days.

Some of the tricks they used to pull to get more juice out of a console or home computer were just insane.

I never had any problems with Army of two and neither did the people on this forum I played it through with. I'm highly anticipating the next one.

Anyway thats not particular to EA it's been poor quality control on the whole for a majority of 360 games released.

You can find bugs and glitches in loads of different big releases on the 360.
