Did a quick search and didnt see this mentioned.

Looks like there is going to be a new directory service for mobile phones:

http://118800.co.uk/

Everyone will be opted in by default but if you want to be ex directory then you need to opt out:

Your questions about privacy
When someone is searching for me on 118800.co.uk, can they see any information about me?
No. All searches on 118800.co.uk are via our secure application that doesn’t show mobile numbers or names and addresses of individuals. Neither do we give prompts that could disclose personal information. We simply say whether we’ve found the individual and, if we have, we forward the enquirer's contact details.

Will I get sales calls via 118 800?
We do not sell or pass data to any commercial organisations. So we think it’s unlikely you will receive many sales calls via our service. But we will monitor call patterns for any suspicious activity, investigate complaints thoroughly and de-list anyone we feel is abusing the service.

Can I be ex-directory with 118 800?
You can become ex-directory by texting the letter ‘E’ to 118800 from the mobile phone you want to be made ex-directory or you can call us on 0800 138 6263. Standard network charges apply. The first time 118 800 contacts you you will be sent an SMS reminding you about how to become ex-directory. Please allow up to 4 weeks for your ex-directory request to take effect.

I am ex-directory, so how can I be put back in the directory?
If you know you are already listed by us as ex-directory – and therefore we have your correct address - you can text the letter ‘I’ (for ‘in’) to 118 800. Alternatively, you can join the directory from this website.

Oh no. *Switches to PayandGo*

EDIT:

Sorry
...but we haven't yet been able to identify the person you're looking for.

Aww they no loves me

Things like this should be opt-in. Disgraceful.

Anyways; I think only 4 people know and want my mobile number, and one of those is work.

So you have to request to speak to the person, they will get a free text to msg you, and you get charged a quid. lol how stupid

Lol some people do keep their number I spose but so many people I know get new mobiles all the time and I keep getting 'I have a new number, it's.......' texts.

Yeah, but obtaining and using a PAC is so much easier unless you're being stalked. I've done it about four times now lol :D I just entered my details in the site, and it 'found' me. I'm going to ring my provider to ensure they understand I don't want my details handing out to these companies to begin with!

I won't be findable on this, but I still think it should definately be opt-in.

I think it's quite ridiculous that they've been granted access to the provider's data when they're using the information for a business - surely it should be part of your contract with the provider that they will be releasing your details to other comapnies?

So god dam annoying. I used to get them all the time.. and its always "Hi guys i have a new phone and this is my new number"

And the reply back is normal, "Im happy for you, but who the **** are you"

Is this not a scam? As soon as I saw.. "text us to be ex-directory" I thought.. hold up..

Well, I'm shocked again. I just got off the phone to O2. She said she'd opt me out of the marketing list (for third parties and O2), but then said "Oh, you're already opted out...". So she said she'd get me added to the "suppression list" (?) which would ensure I didn't get anything. If there needs to be a suppression list, how can I be opted out already?

Anyway, she said this would now mean I don't get any special offers from O2 in future (eg cheap upgrades, special deals). I said I didn't mind getting O2 offers, I just didn't want my data being sold against my will to anyone on the internets

"Nope, not possible I'm afraid. If you don't let us sell your data we won't be sending you any special offers."

WTF? Are they for real? Screw them, then! I'll be shopping around for a more data-aware company for my renewed contract.
