So we have a old Volvo 740 sitting outside, and it has an ability to attract gypsy kinds to our house asking if they can buy it off us. Usually they say "how much do you want for it", but I've always turned them back as I don't want to shake their dirty hands.

Anyway a youngish lad approached us yesterday asking for 500pounds !. I thought scrap car values were around £200 at best. And this kind of interests me in scrapping the car sooner for cash, but not to a dirty man that randomly knocks on doors.

So OCUK members, I would like to know more about this, and how much this car would really go for if I were to do things my self. Also where I would take it for money etc etc.

Thank you,
Ray

Scrap values are way down from what they used to be, you certainly won't get £200 for scrap for a car. What's actually wrong with it?

Actually...why was this young lad asking you for £500?

Only thing I would be worried about is ownership. If you sell it to a random *****, you could find yourself with speeding tickets coming through etc. I'd want proof that its scrap (or agree you can turn it into a state where it would be impossible to drive) before giving it to an unknown.

well it is rather impossible to drive atm, the car is declared sorn and has been for the last 4 years.

No seats in them, maybe a little petrol from the olde days.... also its an auto.

but reading above just makes me think that its better off getting a company to take it for free.

I'd just phone you local scrap metal merchants and ask as the prices fluctuates quite a bit.

If I had a Volvo 740 I'd be driving it, are you sure it was someone wanting a car to put on the road hence the £400 offer as it that sounds way over the top for scrap even for a big car.

We get these people all the time except none of them quotes us a price, just says how much do you want for it, over and over again.

It's obvious its not worth putting on the road from the exterior tbh.

The scrap price has gone up a little bit here, from about 40quid a ton, up to about 80 now. I'd of had the 500quid off him like a shot, ***** or not!

scrap value is low atm. Car scrap value is even less. It's not high quality metal or pure. Loads of plastic, wiring, oil etc.

It's dropped like a rock down here, thousands of cars going through due to this scrappage bs mean there is a glut of available steel.

How? As the seller it is your responsibility to send off the V5 with the new owner's details. You don't just give the buyer the V5.
