I've managed to clear my garage now with enough space to house acouple of peices of home exercise equipment.

Just wondering on peoples thoughts and experiences were of working out at home???

I have a budget of £400 to get me started, I've been looking at rowing machines and cross trainers but not sure what to go for, I already have some free weights.

It depends entirely upon what your goals are. What do you want to do with your body? Bulk up? Become Leaner? Lose weight? Gain weight?

Sorry, I should have said.... I'm trying cut abit more weight and become alittle leaner.

I've managed to lose quite abit of weight sorting out my diet and not using my car for every journey.

So you just want to loose weight? and maybe pack on a bit of muscle?

I work out at home and I just have a set of weights (dumbbells barbell, plenty of heavy weight discs), a bench and a chin up bar. This can be all you need.

For cardio, try going for a bike ride round the local woods or park. Or you could try jogging, and once you really get into your stride try some HIIT (high intensity interval training). All of this can be done with minimal cost and equipment and is great for you. I would say that if your intending on taking up running as a regular part of your routine, it would be a good idea to get some properly fitted running shoes.;)

skipping ropes - £3

the cheap plastic ones are the best, dont go for leather they are an expensive gimmick, they wear out after about 4 months but it only costs £3 to replace

check out ebay for the above

for my boxing training we used to do 3 minute rounds of non stop skipping, you would have to speed up, slow down, do double jumps, crossovers, etc. after one 3 minute round you will be knackered, when you start but keep it up and the strength in your legs and arms will improve as well as making you lose weight.

this is probably the most fun way to exercise and lose weight, i thoroughly enjoy it and it doesnt knacker your knees like running / jogging.

if you dont plan on gaining any muscle then get a cross trainer or rower for your budget, treadmills in this price range will fall apart easily

a set of weights/dumbells, a bench, and a rower/cycler/cross-trainer will do you nicely - especially when the winter comes in. my preference is for the rowing machien, but it does depend on what you're into and what you're after.

Thanks for the advice, I've just bought a new bike for the summer so that was good timing lol... My main concern is trying to lose that little extra around the mid section, its seems to be the hardest part to get it moving from.

If you're literally only just trying to lose fat, you don't need to spend £400 as has been pointed out. The skipping rope idea is a good one.

I already have some free weights that I'm trying to build my arms up alittle, but general aims are to get fitter and lose my round my stomach.

That new bike sounds like the perfect opportunity to lose some weight. A little advice about building up your arms. Remember that if you do not have a balanced physique you will eventually get injured or may just look out of proportion. So do not just do the bicep curls, look at some tricep and shoulder work also. You may find that you want to do body weight exercises for the rest of your body such as pushups, crunches etc. :)

Skipping ropes are great, i need to get mine out and have a shot!
But id go for a decent bench(with some sort of catch for a barbell) and some free weights.

Would it be better to buy a weights bench then?? and any recommendations on what to get?

Thanks for all your replies

i bought a weights bench, ~100kg of weights with two bars of ebay for £40.

granted its not the best thing in the world but it doesthe trick.

... and granted not the best looking, but if you are stuffing it in the garage then who cares? worth a look?

will try ebay first then see if there is anything local, thanks for that.

Any recommendations on a rowing machine also please?
