Mk4 Golf

5K? I thought it was 4.

As for the Cat D - it still might be mint and probably worth looking at.

As the months have gone on the budget has increased.

Would Seat confirm they did the work if I contacted them?

Fox - i'm not expecting low mileage, something around 70-80k would be nice. Some people are asking £4500 for ones on 130k+

Why do you want an overpriced hatchback?

Get a perfectly good low mileage Focus

I don't want an over priced one. I'd have one on my drive now if I wanted one of those.

I like the build quality in the VAG's. You can remap them to good performance levels and I like the look of them - especially the Seat Leon, if I could get it to look like a Cupra R.

I have had a look at the Focus TDCi sports - do they pack much of a punch though?

I want a diesel but as the weeks drag on i'm starting to get fed up and this is where I will go out and buy a Clio 172, my initial car of choice.

Hey, even a Clio is more refined than my Saxo VTS.

I've got a MkIV GTi 150 diesel and I like this car very much. I like the shape and the engine and gearbox and economy. It's a six speed (i think this in only in the top models) so at 70pmh it's turning just 1900rpm and 55mpg is easily acheivable if you have a steady right foot.

I can hardly go fast around Stoke there are too many roadworks and lights. Average mpg is about 47 for mixed town and A roads. Once I really caned it a bit in every gear and it went down to 38mpg and I couldn't really get it to go lower.

The engine pulls very keenly in every gear, even 6th. When I first got it it was weird how little gear swapping it needed because I could just use the throttle rather than knocking it down.

There's a spot below 1500rpm where the turbo is not really blowing and response is a bit pants. Just remember to give it a few revs and it's great.

Handling is a bit ponderous, don't expect great feel like in a Focus or something. It's OK -not bad,not great.

The engine reliability has been faultless over my 2.5 yrs of ownership. I've just changed the discs and pads but that was due to age and wear and tear (6yrs old now).

Nice car, swift, and economical.

Once you try the 150 you won't want the 130.

Do any average diesels after their torque peak have a punch?

You either want a diesel to do a lot of miles in, therefore a 130bhp diesel Focus will do the job fine, or you want a sporty petrol with fairly good economy like a 172.

One or the other at this budget i'm afraid.

I've changed my mind and gone back to the Clio 172 idea.

Seen a local one, 36k on the dial '52 reg that I will go and view tomorrow.

One query is it has had 3 owners, the latest only owning it since November and now he wants to sell it.

Hmmm.
