hi guys i cant decide what gpu to get

its either http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-129-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1410 XFX gtx 275

or the http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-190-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1341 asus gtx 285

its going into a system with a overclocked e5200 till i upgrade to i7 in a few months

ive got a bit of extra money now so figured it made sense buying the best card i could afford

so is gtx 285 worth it over gtx 275 at these prices

any help would be much appreciated

cheers

Get a GTX 260 or 4870 if you game at low res.

A 4870x2 if you want high res.

If you have a SLi/Crossfire board and game at a high resolution with all settings pumped up, then get 260 SLi/4890 Crossfire! ;)

quick response :)

at the moment i have a freinds old 8800gt

ill be playing on 1650x 1080 monitor till i get my 1080p tv coming in a few months which case ill be using that

my psu is a bequiet 650w

assuming you need to give the card back to your friend, i would say GTX260 or even just a 4850 then a DX11 card when they are released otherwise continue using the 8800GT if its a 512MB card for the time being

only thing i read reviews saying 4890 is really loud

thats a good point there bout gtx 260 as its only £150 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-139-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=927

sexy black edition too :)

choices choices :(

the thing is there about a 10% performance gain from the gtx 260 to the gtx 270 for £30 (if were talking bout the cards i previously listed)

and about a 5% performance gain coming from the 275 to the 285 which will cost u £50

at the moment im thinking 275

what u guys reckon ?

my res will be 1920x1080 on a new 24" tft i just bought

currently have a 8800gt also

and atm a 520W corsair which seems will allow me up to a gtx 285 and a slight oc on the cpu which ill need as i need to hit 3ghz from 2.4ghz

The 275 has a memory interface of 448bit v the 285's 512. The 285 has a higher pixel fill rate and a little more memory bandwidth. The clocks could be raised on the 275 to equal a stock (or maybe even greater than some stock 285's) 285 clock speeds. There is also the same number of shader processors on both cards, which is also the same as with the 280. So I guess its fair to say that some of the extra performance you get with the 285 can be equalled by o/c the 275 though not everything hence the 448 v the 512. Regardless, as someone else pointed out, the 285 probably isn't worth the money. Only the other day I was considering buying one and am glad I didn't now. Get the value version 275 imo. :)

If noise and idle power consumption is a concern the GTX275 is best value one to go for.

If you're not so fussed about noise and idle power consumption the 4890 will save you money in the short term.

If it was me (and it could be as I'm considering a new card) the GTX275 is the one I'd go for now.

strange how corsair site says i will need a 450watt + psu for a 4980 + overclock cpu and overclock gfx and a 275+ overclock cpu and overclock gfx will need a 650+

not saying that the idle consumption ur saying is the wrong way round or anything but maybe corsair's site is wack :/ or at load they are the other way around lol

The GTX275 uses about 20-30w more on full load and a little less in idle. There's not a big difference in it, and results can vary. Even the mobo used can have a slight effect.

I suspect the PSU cal is a bit misleading, and I guess the jump between 450w & 650W is down to their PSU range.
