yep, fraud - but arguably very easy to get away with if you do it right. Beware though that there are a few simple mistakes you could very easily make that would cause you get caught if your claim was investegated. Don't do it as it's not worth it.
 
i'm pretty sure, it would be easy to tell when your phone stopped working, i.e. they would be able to see when the last day you stopped making calls / sending texts from the phone, by looking in the log of the phone.
 
Or by using the IMEI which is unique to each handset.

both right - very easy to see on the systems the customer care people use for the networks.
 
The only thing with the abouve to statements is that it depends on how broken the phone is! If its only a damaged screen for example, then its still gonna be on the network etc if you are using it.

But its true that if its broken beyond turning on, and they get down to specifics with your usage, they could find out the phone hasnt been on the network for a while :)
