'Noob' could be the millionth English word

So newbie, newb and noob are all different now?

Either way, wikipedia thinks they are all the same. A brief historical background as well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newbie

It is all the same to my knowledge, just derivatives of the word just different spellings and the like.

Newbie is someone who is new
Noob is someone who is new but its meant more as an insult. Usually meaning lack of skill, knowledge, etc.
n00b is a l33t0rz equivalent of the above...

Same goes for: Nub, Nab, Nublet, noobie, n00bie, Nooby, etc, etc, etc.

And quoting the wiki:

fails to learn from experience, or in some cases, to degradingly refer to users who disrupt other users.

Since when? Someone who fails to learn from experience is just plain stupid and someone who disrupts others is a griefer.

I have never used the term noob to describe either of these, never. Its a LACK of experience not an inability to learn from it.

Errr, no.

Noob = Newbie.

Newbie has been in use long before the net came around and noob is just a take on it and imo should not have its own definition.

Arrrggghh no. In terms of games, a newb is a player who is new to the game and doesn't know how to play. A noob is a player who isn't exactly new, but still doesn't know how to play, or a person who is actually more detrimental to the team than if he wasn't there, sometimes on purpose.

Newb isn't a derogatory term, Noob is. In my opinion anyway.

It's all the same, and used to define a player who lacks experience. There is no differential between newb and noob.

Are you new to the internet? Because it seems like all these "new fangled" definitions have been created by 21st century generation net users who picked them up and then bastardised them.

At least imo :p

Global Language Monitor acknowledges new words once they have been used 25,000 times by media outlets, social networking websites and in other public sources.

Hmmm, I think we should coin our own word and try to get accepted :D

It's not really the 'millionth' -seeing as new terms come along "every 98 minutes"... but it would be around the millionth.

tbh I'm surprised it isn't in the dictionary already.

+1

(hmm, I wonder if '+1' will ever be a 'word' ;))

I couldn't care less really. Imo written language only exists to record spoken language and lexis is fluid. Words change and new words appear over time. Iirc only words with widespread usage enter the dictionary (like that matters) and n00b is used all over the interweb so it defo qualifies.

Errr, this was on newsnight the other night and they ripped it apart. We have already had the 1 million'th word.

Pfft, what a noob thing to do :D
