ST170 - Is this overpriced?

There is obviously a problem with your car, Jez can get more out of his S-Class.

Nope, had it checked out, it has a full ford service history, since I have had it it's been very well looked after. I found a st170 forum and it just so happens that they all have shocking mpg. I managed to get just over 320 miles from a tank once, nearly all motorway. And it costs around £55 to £60 to fill it up. I make that around 27mpg driving like a nun. Shocking but true.

4k will also get you a mint low mileage 172 leaving you with plenty of pocket change. It's also a fair bit quicker and in my opinion almost certainly a lot more fun to drive.

Just to throw the Clio Sports into the mix as I haven't seen them mentioned yet :p

Kid that is rather shocking, I've managed 45MPG with mixed town and motorway driving this was driving like a complete granny of course but I reckon if I got her on a 200 mile + run I could touch 50MPG which is seriously impressive for a Sports hatch. Not what they're made for but least they can be economical when they want to.

Foci aren't the most economical of cars though, my bog standard 52 LX 1.6 Auto would do 300 miles tops to a tank on a really good week. Had a 2.0 manual as a courtesy car for a few days once and did 350 to a tank mostly motorway driving like a saint as it wasn't my car.

Automatic though. My manual 1999 1.6 regularly gets 400 miles out of a tank. Think i worked out a combined average of 37MPG. Modern cars are better granted, but I don't think that's too shabby for an old car.

I find it shocking that my car with a turbo and 70bhp more still gets a lot more mpg than it.

Maybe since you can drive around off boost to save fuel (with less power on tap obviously) as opposed to the Type R which is a highly strung NA? Not sure.

I'm talking about the ST170, which certainly isn't a highly strung NA. Driving like a bewb I get 25-30mpg. On a run I'll get 40mpg at 70 with cruise.

I like my 52 plate ST170, its the only car I have ever kept for 6years, though its not quite stock. I do find it tends to wallow a little at low revs and takes some revs to get the best out of it. I don't find it to bad on tyres unless you keep feeding it the same Pirelli's is came with which I think where made of cheese. It does however drink petrol which is prolly a by product of the intake manifold on the duratech engine which was there solution to more power rather than a turbo.

I wouldn't pay the price your looking at and I would certainly consider the Leon and CTR as alternatives.

...but all in all many years happy driving and only one problem with it which didn't cost to much to repair.

Since you've edited your post it makes more sense.

Looked like you were referring to the Accord Type R before.

Left a lasting impression on me as I went back to a ST a few years later albeit one with power the ST170 was robbed of from the start :)

But as far as the competition went at the time, it was dead reliable, comfortable and looked nice when it's kitted with xenons.

But 2nd hand I would not be looking at one, but a Civic Type R if insurance is not an issue and you want something quicker?

Thanks for all the reponses.

I am all too aware that Ford arent always the car nuts favoured choice in, but dear old dad worked for Henry for 35 years and as such parts are peanuts, so I'd me a mug to go for anything else.

I did get prices from parkers, glass's and general perusing prior to postng this, but I think I've known all along this was overpriced and I was getting carried away with the idea of spending less each month and having more fun.

The ST220 hadnt even entered my head. My only concern is that I may struggle to get it on the drive which is pretty narrow.....saying that I can always chisel half the side of the house away to get it on there.

Thanks once again for a much needed smack across the bonce. You have exorcised my car buying demons! :D
