How is Virgin Media nowadays ? Thinking of moving from ADSL

Virign is one of them when it works its very good but if you have a problem its a nightmare to get it sorted.

They also are awful at billing and screw up all the time then try to blame other parties for there mistakes.

I've been with VM for about 7 years and they're not bad at all now. Im on the 50mbit service and (fingers crossed) not had a problem yet. The downloads can get a bit slow during peak times, mainly in the evening.

They're support a few years a go got fairly poor, but i think since its improved a fair amount.

Pings are great for fps gaming etc, but be aware if you are into rts games that use p2p connections a lot of people including myself are having issues wtih VM. Insane ping spiking with more than 4 players in the game on both demigod and dawn of war 2. Nearly all reported cases are using VM aswell so looks like they maybe have a cap on number of p2p connections you can run at once to prevent torrenting or some such, but makes some games completely unplayable.

i wish i could get this, been promised it for so many years here with even things being in the paper saying its coming and .... NOTHING :(

have you tried calling them ? As it wasn't near me when I first moved in and after a lot of phone calls they finally managed to get it on my street which they told me cost them £1000's to dig up the road etc.

Went with BT in the end back then :p b/c I couldn't wait that long

yep tried emails and calls and nothing ever got done, we basicly had a company in who where digging up all the roads and at the time it was NTL were coming in behind them to join everything up as they had already added it over one side of town but not actually joined it up to the exchange rofl!

still 2 - 3 yrs on and no closer to being finished

They don't touch p2p traffic. All they have is STM.

I can max out my 20mb line no problems on p2p. Only time i can't max it is when I'm STM'd.

I know people who play DoW on VM connections and all is fine.

VM's ADSL service is quite heavily shaped I believe, though not relevant to this thread that could be what the poster here is getting confused with.

Been with them as Ntl/Virgin at least 6 years now from 150kbps! Can't grumble much, now on their mates rates 20MB package coming from 10MB, which is quite a bit cheaper! My uncle is quite high up after their telewest merge.

Sometimes I've felt their throttling is a bit strict, I feel that there is no way I'm in the top 3% or whatever, i'll download a 100mb file or something and get capped, very annoying when this happpens.

All in all very happy, asked for a new cable modem through email when upgrading tariff and it came the day after by UPS! That was only my second modem.

Virgin cable V Virgin ADSL tech support:

Virgin cable support via their internal newsgroups = good.

Virgin support for ADSL = call centers = ****.

Thank god I'm on cable ;)

Nar i 'assumed' it was some kind of p2p limit due to fact me and a friend both on virgin cable and a hell of a lot of other people on it are having trouble with dawn of war 2 and demigod. Mental ping spikes making game unplayable wtih more than 4 players and only common denominator is virgin cable. Maybe its certain areas having issues then.

I have been with Virgin Media since the early days of Blueyonder, and my service has got worse and worse.

I have upgraded my package and router, for the last year I have been supposed to be on 20mb, but I rarely see above 0.5mb, I asked for a new router, no better, they gave me a new box? no difference, I call the call centre the say they will send a new modem, then notice we have a new modem, then say they will call back and never do.

Virgin Media are pathetic. I plug in the phone and get internet, would be as well doing that.

It doesn't sound like you've actually had any engineers out to try and diagnose the problem. I mean, you understand that there's more involved than a router, a modem and a "box", right?

haven't u thought it could be the cable from the box on the wall to the modem, if it as a cut or a kink in the cable it could make issues. or maybe theres a problem on your line.

u should call VM and tell them to come out to diagnose the problem

Our 20 meg service has been great all year. At the start I thought the stm would bug me, but I hardly ever reached it, and if i did it was normally over night.

Noticed recently that my 10mb connection that I was getting roughly 1.2mbps downloads on has dropped to around 400-500k (rapidshare, MU etc), literally at any time I try to download something, do you think it's worth giving them a call?

If I download from their game file pages I do get the 1.2mbps though.

Yeah sorry I did mean that. Yes I am using free RS/MU, but I have had higher speeds in the range of 700k from them previously.
