as stated in the title i game at 1920x1200 resolution and im currently looking for an upgrade. My current setup is:

P5N-T Duluxe
Q6600 intel core 2 quad 2.4ghz
OCZ reaper ram 1066mhz 4gb
nvidia 9800GTX 512mb (gainward)
750w coolermaster PSU

since my resolution is quite high i have been told 1gb cards would suit me better, and i also feel that my current 9800gtx is just getting by on certain games. What do you think i should get? was thinking nvidia 260 or ATI 4890, but i was wondering if;

A) you can run a ATI card on a nvidia board
B) is it true you can run the card on a nvidia board BUT not crossfire

thanks in advance

PS: i think the 4870x2 deal is awsome, but again would the duel card (crossfire card?) work?

I think an 4890 woudl be an excellent choice (especially at the amazing prices you can find).
Anything less and you really wont see enough improvement (9800 gtx are still decent cards).
A 4870 x2 would work fine regardless if it is an nvidia board, but also take into account how cpu speed can limit a cards performance, your q6600 is a great cpu but a lot of games still react better to raw higher clock speeds. tbh though at 1920x1200 it shouldnt make much difference.

AFAIK You can't get crossfire to work on that board - however a 4870X2 would work fine...

As you have an SLI board however I would reccomend 2x 260GTX - works great for me at 2048x pretty much everything flies.

yeah but wouldnt 260 x 2 be more expensive and draw more power?

Probably ideal would be 4870x2 but it's still, to me ,quite expensive. ( Would not argue that at its price it's a good deal it's just that I baulk a little at spending £240+ on a gpu) & I prefer a 'single' card.

4890 I hear is noisy

4870 1Gb looks to me to be a bit of a bargain.

Would agree that you need more than 512mb of ram to run @ 1920x1200 which is why I decided to move from my existing 4870 512mb card.

Decided , in the end , to go back to the dark side - A Gainward (nvidia) 260GTX GS as the reviews I've read of it say it's faster than the 1gb 4870, runs nice and cool and is ,allegedly, silent.

Also ,and very importantly, it's only £134

Only ordered today so cannot report any personal experience yet- Hopefully it will be a positive experience :)

Am also mindfull that next gen are due before end of year and it's likely I'll upgrade (Again!!) then, so dont want this upgrade to cost too much

4890 without a doubt, especialy at the current prices.

Fan is barely noticably at 30% which is as fast you will ever need it. It's only £20 more than the 260 and is more powerful especialy as a res's of 1680 and above.

However, I will say that the new ATI cards are "supposedly" coming end of this year, so if you don't want massive FPS then I would say go with a cheaper solution for now and then wait for the new series of cards. The 260 OR 4870 would both run very well, personaly I would go with the 4870 due to price but thats me.

Fenris, I know noise levels are subjective, but I am aiming to build a similar setup to what you have which should help me to assess this more accurately. Have you overclocked your 4890 to be barely audible at 30% fan levels? In relation to this, do you have the case fans that came with the FT01and what type of cpu cooler setup do you have? Thanks in advance.

My 4890 is currently overclocked "a bit", can't remember exactly but not all that much. My fortress uses the stock case fans yes which may be a factor as they are certainly not Noctua's. My CPU cooler is a sunbeam with fan speed kept at around 50% and is literaly silent.

It's not silent, I will say that now, but it is no louder than you would expect from a case with what I have in it. I realy do not notice it during gaming/movies etc and music drowns out any fan noise.
