I have a pc which I am fixing for someone which has the following symptoms:

When power button is pressed, you get a short few seconds of power (fans spin up) but then it cuts out and you dont get nothing..

I dont think its the power supply as I have tested another power supply in this unit and get the same problem (a known working power supply) so Im pretty sure its deffo the motherboard.

Is there another way I can test before I say (yep its your motherboard).

Have you tested the power button?

It does sound like a motherboard problem. The only way really is to swap the componants around with known working ones.

had that problem once found out it did not like my usb stick in when booting, was a gigabyte board

i'd check that ur mate was not clearing the bois and left the jumper on clear cmos settings as this will produce the same effect on some boards

also clearing the bios might help if its not been done already

also check the power connectors make sure they are fully pushed into motherboard

just keep at it logically

You could try booting the motherboard without anything in it, and one by one adding the components till it goes wrong. Also checking the spacers behind the mobo as I've seen extra ones cause all sorts of problems by shorting the mobo.
