Is pop music the worst it's ever been?

What makes you think that having catchier, yet less meaningful lyrics degrades the quality of a song?

It wasn't so much a point about the lyrics as a point about the song. It's catchy because it's repetitive, not because it's artistic or inventive.

I'm not going to high horse this one, because I firmly believe that art is what you make it, but personally I prefer music with a bit of feeling behind it.

All I hear is music with absolutely no musical virtuosity, horribly overcompressed backings with nothing of interest to the instrumentation or production, vocal performances by singers with poor voices which have been processed beyond belief in order to sound acceptable and paint by numbers song structure and musical progressions. I can't imagine wanting to listen to this, it actually drags me down it's so uninspirational.
Pop is aimed at 14year olds, and it does seem that they like to listen to most of their music thru mobile phone speakers or laptop speakers.

Not ideal, but I guess if you compress the **** out of a song when mixing it may sound a little fuller on such poor speakers. The downside being that it won't sound much nicer than mobile phone speakers when you play the song back on a decent soundsystem. :(

I don't really listen to the radio in the daytime now unless it's on at work and I must say pop music now is poor, 10 years ago we had Supergrass, Blur, De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Prodigy and in fact the last song I heard on the (daytime) Radio which I thought was listenable was "Warriors Dance"

That said, I was surprised to hear the Skream remix of La Roux during the day, even tho it was edited down... There is decent music being made at the moment, it's just not what's in the top 40. ;)

The latest Boxcutter and Martyn albums have been on repeat for me over the last week...

pop music is just what is popular at that current time. so its as good as it has ever been, however, you are just not into the sort of music which is popular :p

It is very poor at the moment, there are a lot of songs which are just truly awful at the moment and it's something which I've definitely picked up on. It was nice to hear Kings of Leon on the radio occasionally, but most of the rest makes me wonder what the world is coming to. Even when I was a kid, I didn't get hooked in by the awful novelty songs, it worries me that people do.

Thing is for all you people saying its awful, there are millions that love it. Its all down to taste. You couldnt pay me to listen to stuff like megadeath which is complete garbage imo

I do wonder if those people really love it though. They might buy it because they arn't aware of other music, they don't actively seek it out. Pop is naturally the best promoted music. Also possibly because of image related issues, or thier freinds listen to it etc. Perhaps they do just enjoy it though, or don't like anything "unexpected" in thier music.

Not a fan of Megadeath myself, but my brother is so I'm quite familiar with them. I'd say that of what I've heard at least there seems to be some musical skill involved and there is genuine feeling behind the vocals. Some "riffs" are unique and memorable and you can hear that thought has gone into them.

I've started listening to older bands and alternative music now. I'm 24 in 2 weeks and I'm not listening to stuff that was popular when I was younger that I wasn't interested or hadn't heard.

You only need to listen to modern radio to find there's a lot more chin wagging than new interesting music these days. There's only so much repetative rubbish they can play.

I find myself looking around and not finding much music I'd buy these days. Sad really.

Pop is for the brainless and brainwashed masses who lack imagination and need a vacuous and catchy tune that is easy to identify and demands no intelligence of the listener, pop is the junk food of the music world!
I always thought that proper music was there to be appreciated by those people that actually knew music and how to play it, which puts me in the other category :p
