gaming in uni halls

I have been at Stafford the past 3 years, I defy someone to go to that uni, not play games and somehow avoid dying of boredom. It's not a bad place, but you definitely need to have your own things to do :p

I abhor night life where the dredges and low lifes of society meet up with decent people to create this horrible mix.

I don't want to go out and meet more friends, I have enough and it's not about how many I can fit on my facebook list.

:( way to sum up my life there....

But seriously, the point is that it is a way of relaxing and chilling out, and is completely up to you whether you choose to go out at night, or just stay in and chill out with some gaming..or whatever..uni isnt -all- about socialising, of course there's work involved, but unless you're like some of the people i've only seen emerge from their rooms once in this entire year, you wont want to be working 24/7. It's during those 'out of work hours' times in which uni provides an excellent opportunity to meet and be around new and interesting people..what you do with them is your own concern, but a lot of people enjoy clubbing as a way to relax and take their minds off of work..

Now, a response that's on topic..um..living in London halls and havent had any problem gaming..

spoken clearly by someone whos never been to Uni.

I don't want to get in an argument, but someone here posted that they do exactly as I mentioned who is at uni.

Also my best friends who's at Exeter uni does the same, he has to do a lot of tunnelling iirc.

So, clearly I'm not wrong.

Just finished my first year in halls, its amazing. Im a counter strike addict and getting 5 ping on all uk servers was quality. If anything wish the connection wasnt so good, then I might of actually had a decent sleeping pattern not getting up at 3pm going to the bar get home play cs till 7 am.

Humm Im gonna miss it, bring on the virgin broadband next year, what a nightmare thats gonna be with 4 computer science students...

2 people do it thus making you right. What about the tens of thousands that dont?

what uni is this?

I was at Royal Holloway and it was stunningly good. 100Mbps with 8Mb+ download speeds, no ports or websites blocked- < 5 pings to almost all UK servers... amazingly good whenever I decided to load up some TF2 :)

Seems likes years ago (cos it was :p) but at newcastle uni in halls you get basically a 40mb connection per flat, absolutely immense! except absolutely everything under the sun is blocked!!
basically me and my other very computer savvy housemate got guild wars and vent working through socks and http tunnel but steam is absolutely impossible to get working. Also only go on porn from trusted websites, ie ones you have to pay for like bangbros etc, cos the random ones show up on the firewall and you will be called in and asked to explain yourself. loads of my friends had to go in for meetings with the internet people about porn and some even had their access blocked. pretty hilarious. basically if you like porn and gaming, ie if youre a member of these forums, you wont like first year at newcastle in that respect. but as for the rest such as drinking and women, newcastle cant be beaten.

Last year in halls some games worked and some didnt. WoW worked fine, but when I loaded steam and refreshed a server list I got auto banned instantly. Sucked in the first week, didnt get net back for ages

A common misconception that 'tens of thousands' are also right. The numbers are irrelevant. Its what you personally like that matter, and what you personally like by definition cannot be wrong to you.

:D Classic. If you pay for your porn its ok lol.. What about youporn? lol Bangbros, damn they really are world famous

Ugh @ the whole "drink-game" argument. Some of you like to go get wasted, some like to sit in and play games. Almost all of us are somewhere in the middle.

Myself, I get out when I can afford the cash and the time - when I can't, I stay in and watch a film/play some games. Stop arguing your corner - it's just sad.

Re: Unis; here's the thoughts of a few friends online atm :-)

Lancaster - 100mbps to your room (symmetrical, I get actual throughput of 90mb up and down - 10mbps in a few older halls, but I think there's only one or two left out of a couple of hundred), almost everything unblocked although websites go through a http proxy (no filtering). XBOX/PS3/wii all work, as do torrents (small fine if caught doing illegal things, 3 strike rule).

UCLAN (Preston) - depends on the halls - uni owned are 10mb down, 2mb up. VERY restrictive (Browsing and MSN are about it) - no gaming/voip/torrents and apparently a nasty proxy server. All of which can be gotten around for certain programs. No website filtering. Other halls are hit-and miss, with some being as restrictive and others being practically open.

Sheffield Uni - "Pretty quick" (my friend doesn't know actual speed) very little blocked in terms of websites or programs although the occasional few don't work. All halls are about the same.

I'll add more when I see people online :-)

Ha! That made me laugh!

I'll hopefully be heading off to Loughborough this year and i want to try and move away from the games. I know i can do it. I sold my 8800GTX a couple of months back to force myself to revise for my A2's (as you can see from my sig :(). I want to play some games of L4D, but i don't feel like i need it as i did before. I'll be buying a new graphics card soonish so that i can play the occasional game but that will be it.

I'm going to uni to try new things, meet new people and generally make the most of my time there. I think it would be quite sad if i ended up spending all my time inside playing games. I don't like drinking that much but i can still go out and have a good time without getting hammered.

In my first year my halls (Chamberlain Hall, Birmingham) had NO internet access at all in the rooms, and the only net access was available in a small computer room in the basement.

Funny how no internet made us turn to all sorts of crazy entertainment :D

Hahahaha Chamberlain Hall, what an awful place! Good thing it's been closed now :p

I'm afraid you are, really.

No one is saying that uni is about getting totally drunk or even about going to bars, but if you don't spend most of your spare time with your fellow students you are missing out on a tremendous opportunity to meet and spend time with some good, likeminded people. After all, you've all travelled to this place for the same reason - to study - why waste this social opportunity, one which most of us will never experience again.

Whilst I did my fair share of gaming in university (all our network access was unlocked bar P2P), I probably spent more of my time outdoors, seeing a world I hadn't really considered before. When people say uni is about socialising, they make a very good point. You were forced to go to your local school whether you liked it or not, however here is a place you choose to spend the next few years of your life in. That is what makes university such a good experience from a social side, and that is why it isn't just about the education.

If you had the misfortune to go to Stafford you would know this is not the case here.

I met some great people at uni, but most people are from Stafford or Stoke and thus have groups of friends already who they spend their evenings with.

There is NOWHERE decent to go out in Stafford for a night out.

The nightlife there is beyond horrid and I spent many a night in my first year bored and lonely.
Games are ESSENTIAL for geeks in Stafford. Basically if your not blessed with some good looks then you aint gonna score chics because there are so few and most are marketing students or media students.
You are not going to find many like minded people there if you study computing because most of the semi interesting people are introverts and so are all in there rooms all night anyway.

Basically if you go to Stafford you go to study and play games with fellow geeks or you get the hell out of Stafford and go to Brum.

Don't believe me, well read some comments about Stafford uni on Google and see what we mean.

sorry to hijack but does anyone know if any of the halls at northumbria uni block games? places such as victoria hall or camden court?
